The design of the Chongqing Great Hall of the People imitates the palace forms of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, using the traditional method of axial symmetry. The structure is well-proportioned, the contrast is strong, the layout is rigorous, and it is elegant and lively. The golden dome of the main part of the dome is derived from the imperial dome of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, imitating the Temple of Heaven with the meaning of praying for "the peace of the country and the people"; the cylindrical watchtower in the center is the epitome of Tiananmen Square in Beijing; the north and south wings are inlaid with towers similar to the four corners of the Forbidden City in Beijing; the vastness In the courtyard, the front steps are wide and flat, with six steps.

The Southwest Region was abolished in 1955. In 1956, the Southwest Administrative Committee Auditorium was renamed Chongqing People's Auditorium. In 1989, the east building, which was built in accordance with high-star hotel standards, was completed, and the building area of ??the auditorium increased from 18,500 square meters in the 1950s to 32,200 square meters.

In 1997, Chongqing was under direct jurisdiction. The Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government adopted public opinion and decided to demolish the wall of the auditorium and built the People's Square, which became Chongqing's municipal, cultural and leisure square. It was integrated with the People's Auditorium and became Chongqing's largest square. An important place for city tourism and hospitality. Over the years, the auditorium has received more than 100 important leaders of the party and state as well as foreign dignitaries, and has been highly appreciated.
