Which 26 countries are the Schengen area of the European Union?

Schengen area refers to the area composed of 26 European countries that fulfilled the Schengen Agreement signed in Schengen Town, Luxembourg in 1985. For international travelers, this area is very much like a single country. Border control is needed to enter and leave this area, but there is almost no border control between countries in this area.

The Schengen area includes four non-EU countries: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, and three EU micro-countries: Monaco, San Marino and Vatican. Although there are also non-EU countries, the Treaty of Amsterdam adopted in 1999 formally regards the Schengen Agreement as a part of EU law. Except Ireland and Britain, all other EU countries are required to implement the existing Schengen norms, but Bulgaria, Romania and Cyprus have not yet fulfilled the agreement.
