Tomb-Sweeping Day is the most solemn ancestor worship festival of the Chinese nation, a traditional cultural festival, a respect for ancestors and a cautious pursuit of the future. Tomb-Sweeping Day embodies the national spirit, inherits the sacrificial culture of Chinese civilization, and expresses people's moral feelings of respecting their ancestors and telling stories. Tomb-Sweeping Day is rich in customs, which can be summarized as two festivals and traditions: one is to worship the ancestors, and to pursue the future cautiously; The second is to fight for it.

In 755-79000 AD, it was recorded that the East County of Hanbian sent owls, and on May 5, owl soup was given as a gift to officials. Eat bad birds, and then eat. The reason why the owl soup has not been handed down is that owls are getting less and less because they eat too much, and it is not easy to catch them.

By the Eastern Han Dynasty, the custom of eating zongzi had appeared, but it was not until the Jin Dynasty that zongzi became the main food of the Dragon Boat Festival.

There are many origins of eating zongzi, but most people are willing to associate zongzi with Qu Yuan.

Qu Yuan

Qu Yuan, a native of Chu State during the Warring States Period, was once the left.

Qu Yuan loved his country very much, and his loyalty, filial piety and benevolence made Qu Yuan fulfill his duties as a courtier in good faith. So he should call a spade a spade in court and put forward opinions that he thinks are wrong.

There are warnings about Qu Yuan's story in Historical Records, Historical Records and Biographies of Qu Yuan, Incompetent Son and New Country Records.

In Qu Yuan's history, admonition is the duty of courtiers, but he forgot that it also has disadvantages. As the king of a country, he can handle the advice he doesn't have. According to law, I don't like it.

Qu Yuan was exiled three times in his life, which was very disappointing, but even so, he loved his country from the bottom of his heart. So when the news of the fall of Ying Du, the capital of Chu, came, 76-year-old Qu Yuan left sad tears. These tears are for the dead Chu people, and also for the faith that can never be realized.

On the fifth day of May, 278 BC, Qu Yuan, who wandered to Dongting Lake, Hunan Province, threw himself into the Miluo River and died heroically.

Everyone knows that Qu Yuan is a loyal minister, so every fifth day of May, people will bring things to commemorate him.

Eating zongzi is the custom of Chu State. To commemorate him, on this day, people cooked the wrapped zongzi and threw them into the Miluo River. If the fish is full, it won't hurt Qu Yuan.

Today's S zongzi are mostly triangular, but in fact, the earliest zongzi have no fixed shape.

zongzi

Legend has it that Meng Jiangnv and her husband Qi Liang were arrested for building the Great Wall. Another year and three years, no news.

Meng Jiangnv, who longed for her husband, decided to go thousands of miles away to find her husband. At that time, in May, every household was making jiaozi, and Meng Jiangnv also made jiaozi, her husband's favorite food. But to her surprise, her husband had died in the city wall, and the heartbroken Meng Jiangnv was in tears.

In order to commemorate their love, people wrap zongzi into a triangle, with one corner representing yin and the other corner representing yang, which means that yin and yang are separated, but they will never be separated.

The story of Jiang Nv is just a legend. Regarding the shape of zongzi, it is more reliable to say that it is related to the horn. This statement comes from "Two Years of Qing Palace": As soon as you were born, you had your horns. It seems to continue, to continue the ancient people.

Sacrifice is an ancient tradition. Cattle are high-level sacrifices and can only be used in sacrificial activities presided over by the emperor. Ordinary people will wrap millet with zongzi leaves. Because the ancients believed that the horns of cattle could be psychic, they wrapped zongzi into horns to sacrifice.

The inscription on the historical wall unearthed in the Western Zhou Dynasty recorded a sentence: (Qi Mu) focus () wide, thinking. The two corners of the head of the sacrifice are flush and shiny, which is just suitable for sacrifice.

worried

Second, insert wormwood to ward off evil spirits.

The Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to the Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasties, that is, the ancient times in history.

In ancient times, the solstice in summer and the solstice in winter were the dividing lines of calendars, so it was of great significance and led to various grand activities.

Dragon Boat Festival is the solstice of ancient summer.

In ancient times, people used the method of chronology of branches, and the dates were determined according to the order of branches, as were festivals, so the Dragon Boat Festival was not fixed on the fifth day of May, but at noon on the first day of May. Later, after continuous evolution, the Dragon Boat Festival was fixed on the fifth day of May.

The view that the Dragon Boat Festival is the summer of the solstice is most recorded in the Book of Songs by Sima Biao, a famous historian in the Western Jin Dynasty: midsummer, everything is bloom, summer is coming, and Yin Qi appears, which makes the fear of things indelible.

Because after the summer solstice, the weather is hot and dry, snakes and insects breed. In order to repel mosquitoes and

You can use mugwort leaves everywhere on the grass. Li said in Li Shizhen that mugwort can moxibustion all diseases.

There is a story about the origin of wormwood.

Huang Chao (875-884)

Legend has it that at the end of the Tang Dynasty, a man named Huang Chao rose to revolt. It is said that he is a terrible murderer.

One day, Huang Chao and his rebels came to Dengzhou, Henan.

Before the army entered the city, he and an entourage dressed as ordinary people to explore the terrain. Shortly after entering the city, he was surprised to find that many people in the city fled with their families.

Huang Chao read smoothly, thinking that something had happened, and asked a woman around him what was going on?

Seeing that Huang Chao was a stranger, the woman immediately whispered to him that the magistrate had ordered Huang Chao to enter the city at once so that we could run for our lives.

Huang Chao continued to ask, if you are running for your life, why are you holding the younger child and the older child?

The woman replied that the boss's parents were killed by the rebels. They were orphans and the children were my children. If Huang Chao calls, I'd rather give up my children and protect the people I love. Entrusted by others, you must be loyal to others.

Xiahou _ this woman's words touched the court very much. He told his wife that he was Huang Chao, and he never hurt anyone, only against the government.

Say that finish, Huang Chao conveniently cut down a few wormwood trees for the woman, let her stick them at the door as a souvenir, let the rebels win, and don't hurt her.

The woman immediately told the news to other villagers, and sure enough, all the people escaped.

This day happens to be the Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of May, so every day after that, people will insert wormwood in front of the door to keep safe. Over time, the custom of inserting wormwood has been handed down.

In addition to inserting wormwood to avoid poison, people also display patterns of scorpion, centipede, gecko, toad, spider and other five poisons on vests, so that children can avoid poison by wearing them.

dragon boat race

Thirdly, dragon boat race is the most important ferry activity in the Dragon Boat Festival.

The custom of dragon boat race originated from totem worship in ancient times.

Wen Yiduo elaborated this view in detail in his paper Chronology of Jingchu Times.

Teacher Wen Yiduo believes that the ancient Wuyue people worshipped dragons and regarded themselves as descendants of dragons, which is a standard totem worship.

As an ancient Baiyue ethnic group, most ethnic groups in wuyue have been integrated into the Han nationality, but there are also descendants of a few branches, which have been handed down to Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Dai and Li ethnic groups.

In the customs of these ethnic minorities, the worship of dragon gods has been passed down gradually, among which the Dragon Boat Festival of Miao nationality is the most famous.

dragon

The Miao people's Dragon Boat Festival in early May is mainly about sacrifice, and even legends are related to dragons.

Once upon a time, there was an old man named Bao Gong. He and his only son, Jiubao Band, make a living by fishing.

One day, father and son went fishing together. Suddenly, a strong wind blew, and a dragon suddenly jumped into the deep pool and dragged the Jiubao band away. Bao quickly jumped into the pond and found a dragon cave. He swam to Longdong and found his son dead.

In order to avenge his son, Bao Gong sneaked into Longdong with fire grass. A big fire destroyed Longdong. The fire burned for three days and nights and finally killed the dragon.

After the dragon died, it floated on the water. The villagers came to share the meat when they saw such a big dragon. That night, the dead dragon had a dream for the villagers: I hurt the only son of the old man and I lost my life. If you can do it well, slide on the river with fir trees for a few days according to my body. Like when I was alive, I will make clouds and rain to make you have a good harvest.

The next day, according to the dragon, people made a boat out of fir trees and glided on the river for several days. Sure enough, it rained happily. It was the fifth day of May.

Gou jianjian

There is another saying about dragon boat racing, that is, Gou Jian's theory of King Yue is recorded in Compendium of Materia Medica.

Legend has it that after Gou Jian destroyed the country, the King of Yue secretly practiced the water army in the name of Du Jie.

In fact, in ancient times, dragon boat races were not unique to the Dragon Boat Festival at first, but could be held in the morning and evening. For example, the Dragon Boat Festival exam records that on February 2nd, Shuaifu won an objective competition.

Gradually, dragon boat racing evolved into a custom and was handed down.

In the Tang Dynasty, boat racing gradually evolved into an entertainment activity, and its lively scene was incomparable to any other festival. Zhang Jianfeng's Chu Biography has a vivid description:

On May 5th, sunny, Huayang sang "Xiao Ying" by the river. Before you left the county seat, you heard the harmony on the river. When you leave, you are sure that your horse is led by a red flag. The clothes on both sides are fragrant, and the silver hairpin is like a frost blade. Knock three times, the red flag opens and two dragons jump out of the water. Shadow waves fly to Wan Jian, drums are loud and choppy. The drums are ringing and the eyes of two dragons are blinking. The people on the slope were stunned by lightning, and a rainbow hung on the telephone pole. The front boat won the bid, and the rear boat lost power and left the radius. Eyebrows hurt and blood is always fighting. When a friend got lost on the shore, his heart was burning. Only the winners and losers are rewarded, and both sides have five rounds. Play with everything for a while and ask for a tattoo. Today, I carefully observe children of different races. Uncle He has the right of way. If you don't I don't want to go to the seaside, you and I will have to destroy this car.

Besides eating zongzi, wormwood and dragon boat racing, different nationalities have different customs, such as mowing grass, sending fans, eating eggplant or long beans, etc. But in the final analysis, it is a life of praying for happiness and a memory of saints. It is these profound cultural connotations that make the Dragon Boat Festival still the most important traditional festival of the Chinese nation after more than two thousand years.
