Kangdarama Hotel hidden in the depths of mountains and lakes —— Meeting Bawa in Lanka (6)

Kanda Rama Heritage Hotel (Heritance? Kandalamahotel was designed by Sri Lankan architect Bawa and completed in the early 1990s. It is located in Danbula, a cultural triangle in central Sri Lanka. In 2000, the American Green Building Association (USGBC) named it the first LEED hotel in the world.

I like to call Kangdarama Hotel Rock Hotel (all articles use this name) for three reasons. First, the names are popular and easy to remember. Secondly, when most tourists just step into the hotel, the first thing they see is the big stone standing proudly in the lobby, like a cave; Thirdly, the hotel is located in Sigiriya, an important historical and cultural site in Sri Lanka.

Locke Hotel is a five-star hotel with 160 rooms. It is located in the big forest, built on the mountain, spreading its wings, as if embracing the towering green hills; Adjacent to the wide Rama Lake in Kanda, overlooking Lion Rock; The vertical frame of the facade near the lake is covered with green vines, which blend in with the forest. Tropical rain forest is its barrier, clear water and blue sky is its grace, and its geographical environment is unique.

Bawa's expectation for the journey experience of the project is: tourists start from Danbule, a few kilometers to the west, cross a jungle, and then cross a huge ridge that seems impossible to cross; Go through a long slope and reach the hotel entrance like the cave at the top of the ridge; A cave-like corridor connects the entrance and the reception hall, facing the reservoir and the Lion Mountain in the distance; The four-story guest room is located below the elevation of the reception hall, winding on the cliff surface and facing east.

The magnificent scenery should be seen from a distance, and the best view should be the island in the middle of Lake Rama in Kanda. Unfortunately, if we don't row on the lake, we can't go to the island to watch for a long time. You can only watch carefully and appreciate slowly along the path set by Bawa.

Bank business hall

The slow ascent took us into the lobby on the fifth floor of the hotel. Before we arrived, the voices of surprise had been one after another. A boulder is reserved at the entrance side of the lobby, and wide stone steps are laid beside the boulder to guide tourists into the lobby front desk. People don't have time to rest, so they grab the photo artifacts around them and keep taking pictures of big stones. The lobby is a reinforced concrete structure, and the space is formed between rocks. The two are skillfully integrated by Bawa, just like a huge Pingdingshan cave, which is open and transparent.

A small tunnel connects the hall with the reception hall and dining room. One side of the tunnel is a reserved rock wall, and the other side is a round white wall, which is as deep and narrow as a cave. At the end of the tunnel, the space is suddenly enlightened, the sun is shining, and the lakes and mountains are close at hand. This is just a prelude. The sharp contrast between natural scenery and space light and shadow makes tourists extremely happy, and the wonderful experience adds to the fun of exploration.

Public spaces such as reception hall, coffee shop, restaurant, bar and swimming pool are mostly distributed on the fifth floor of the hotel, which is also the top floor of the hotel. Architectural elements such as large terraces, verandahs, floor-to-ceiling windows, etc., let the natural landscape blend into the room and appear in the tourists' field of vision to the maximum extent. The ground is made of black granite, the light on the surface can be distinguished, and the natural scenery is mirrored on the ground, which reduces the heavy feeling of a large area of cement ground.

The stairs in the hotel center are arranged in an eclectic way, only to connect the architectural spaces scattered between cliffs. At the top of the stairs, the huge owl spread its wings in the air and its bulging eyes approached the passengers upstairs, which was another surprise experience. This is the symbol of the Rock Hotel, a steel sculpture. Owl looks lifelike and rough in shape, and its material characteristics are brought into full play by artists. It was created by the famous artist Laki Sennayaki, so the whole traffic space is full of movement. Such designs and artworks have filled all the spaces in the hotel, greatly enhancing the artistic taste of the hotel.

The infinite pool of Kanda and Lake Rama form a cliff-like water group. Swimmers are suspended between the sky and the water, enjoying endless comfort. The water in the swimming pool uses recycled pure water, which is the green design of the Rock Hotel.

With a flat roof, it is a wonderful tropical garden with lush plants, which is suspected to be a continuation of the forest in Houshan and seamlessly connected with lush trees. The roof is connected to the sixth floor of the east wing of the hotel, and the roof garden overlooks Kanda Rama Lake and the surrounding forest, with a wide view. The arrangement of this series of green public spaces makes passengers suspect of living in a big forest.

Public transport space

With the arrangement of multiple stairs and elevators, the whole fifth floor is equivalent to a transportation hub and a functional floor of a mixed public space, which is convenient for tourists to enjoy. The stairwell is designed in an open way, with different forms, characterized by lightness and transparency. Stair components are carefully designed based on function, and the effect is pleasing to the eye.

The elevator room in the central area is cleverly designed, the elevator shaft is not closed, and all components, electrical equipment, bridge box traction and other facilities are presented to passengers one by one. In order to find out the secret, Chen Gong and I went up and down the stairs, feasting our eyes and gaining a lot.

Down the stairs, down the fifth floor, is the guest room area. Guest room buildings are distributed on the two wings of the hotel and scattered in front of the mountain. The scattered rooms are arranged in parallel with the same contour line, and the corridor connects these scattered buildings into a whole, with a total length of 1 km, winding on the cliff surface. The promenade turns with the location of the building or the preservation of the rock. Each corner is designed as a small hall, where chairs and corresponding works of art are placed to facilitate passengers to rest and enjoy the scenery.

The columns, beams and slabs of this corridor are combined in the simplest architectural form, accompanied by exposed rocks, which are difficult to distinguish from each other. The corridor is spacious and breezy. You can see clear water, blue sky, rocks, trees and works of art. Walking in it, you may be traveling in a world of pictorial, comfortable and cozy.

Green design

The architectural form of Rock Hotel is modern, and its connotation is full of the charm of Sri Lanka. Bawa's design embodies the concern for nature and human beings and the concept of sustainable development. The main building of the hotel has a certain distance from the cliff, which not only preserves the integrity of landscape vegetation, but also ensures the lighting and ventilation requirements of each room. The overhead design on the first floor will not change the walking habits of wild animals, and rainwater can naturally flow or flow into special collection ponds. The damage of various design measures to the natural environment has been minimized. It's a pity that we are just tourists, and we can't understand the mystery in depth.

Another main design feature of the hotel is the vertical greening of the facade near the lake. Bawa made a concrete grid on the external wall of the building, and vines climbed from the first floor to the roof, which had a good shading and heat insulation effect. The building melts in the lush forest, and only at night, when the lights are on, the rock hotel is exposed to people's vision.

Bawa is good at using the characteristics of tropical monsoon climate in Sri Lanka. In architectural design, the circulating mountain wind is used to adjust the air to the maximum extent, and all rooms, including bathrooms, can be naturally ventilated. Every corner of the hotel makes passengers feel fresh, cool and comfortable, and most days there is no need for air conditioning.

The whole hotel building is simple in form, simple in materials and pure in color. The beams and columns of reinforced concrete structure are only painted in three colors: black, white and gray. The walls are gray-green, and the stairs and doors are all made of wood. There are countless designs like this, which is the greatest respect for the hotel's environment. After more than 20 years, Bawa's design concept is highly consistent with contemporary environmental protection and universal values.

Guest room building

There are many kinds of rooms in the Rock Hotel, which are located on the hillside and the space is relatively compact. Compared with the spacious corridor, the room area is not large, but the balcony embracing the mountains is essential. Sitting on the balcony to have a rest, the green leaves are within reach. Most rooms face Rama Lake in Kanda, and the space is spacious and comfortable. Vines are wrapped around the concrete sunshade outside the balcony, which reduces the invasion of high temperature and heat in South Asia.

My room is on the seventh floor, near the lake. The balcony is comfortable and the calm lake is close at hand. In the evening, the mist is dense, the dark green island in the middle of the lake floats on the lake like a boat, and the lion rock in the distance is looming, which is very comfortable. There is really an artistic conception of "looking straight upstairs, the distance is boundless" We sat on the balcony drinking tea and sighing coffee, which was endless and very comfortable.

The lush mountain forest is a world of wild animals. When we enjoy it on the balcony, unexpected guests come to visit. A few agile monkeys quickly climbed up the concrete awning covered with vines and gestured to us. Are they attracted by the smell of coffee on the table? We didn't dare to stay long, picked up the coffee and quickly retreated to the room, ending the happy coffee time ahead of schedule.

This is an eternal regret. After all, I just want to stay quietly on the big balcony and enjoy the endless lake view. It is not easy to protect wild animals and let tourists enjoy them.

The next morning, the sun was dim and the mountain breeze was blowing gently. Looking at the distant lakes and mountains from the big balcony, the hot air balloon rises slowly with the sun, and the poetry of "the rising sun clears the obstacles and the clear clouds wash the green pool" jumps into my heart. We left the room and walked by the lake. Lake Rama, the sacred field at our feet, is quiet and serene, and Sigiria in the distance is green.

After a day and a night of experience, I have long been intoxicated with this boundless environment and addicted to the architectural design of Bawa. The Rock Hotel is located near Rama Lake in Kanda and can be hidden in the mountains. The architectural decision-making is very clever, and Rama Hotel in Kanda is well-deserved to be famous in the world.

20 17 During the architectural tour in Bawa, Sri Lanka, ink designer Sasha took a lot of photos for the Rock Hotel. When reviewing, she felt that she had a deep understanding of the space design of the hotel, so she used many photos taken by Sasha when writing this travel note. Thank you.
