What is dual personality?

Dual personality, also known as multiple personality disorder or dissociative identity disorder, is a rare mental illness. It is defined as that a person shows different personalities or states in different periods, and these personalities have unique ways of thinking, emotional experience and behavioral characteristics.

In dual personality, a person may experience many different personality states, which will change in different situations, and each personality state may have independent memory, attitude and consciousness. There may be obvious differences between these personality states, including gender, age, accent, knowledge, interest and so on.

This disease is usually related to traumatic experience and extreme psychological stress. The transition between personality states may be a defense mechanism to help individuals cope with unbearable emotions, memories or situations. However, this split state may have a negative impact on personal life and function.

Dual personality is a complex mental illness, which needs to be evaluated and treated by a professional psychologist or psychiatrist. The goal of treatment is usually to promote the integration of personality and reduce the conflicts and troubles between different personality states.
