I turn and see the waves moving as from heaven, and clouds above the cliffs coming idly, one by one.

Translation

The fisherman rests on the western hills at night, draws clear Hunan water in the morning and cooks with bamboo as firewood.

When the sun came out, the clouds disappeared, and the sound of sculling came from the green landscape.

Looking back, the fishing boat has drifted down on the horizon, and the white clouds on the mountain are floating at will, chasing each other.

Liu Zongyuan's short poem about mountains and rivers was written in Yongzhou (now Lingling, Hunan). In 86 AD (the first year of Yuanhe in Tang Xianzong), Liu Zongyuan was demoted to Yongzhou because of his participation in Yongzhen's innovation, and his ambition turned into a cloud. He suffered a heavy political blow and left his feelings in a foreign land, wrote the famous Eight Records of Yongzhou, and wrote many poems about the lakes and mountains in Yongzhou. The Fisherman is one of the representative works.

a wind, bringing willow-cotton, sweetens the shop, and a girl from Wu, pouring wine, urges me to share it.

with my comrades of the city who are here to see me off, and as each of them drains his cup, I say to him in parting.

oh, go and ask this river running to the east, if it can travel farther than a friend's love!.

Translation

The catkins are blown by the spring breeze, and the hotel is full of fragrance. The maid holds out the wine and advises me to taste it carefully.

Young friends from Jinling rushed to see them off. If you want to leave or stay, you can drink your joys and sorrows.

please ask me, which is more long-term, water flowing from the east, love or running water?

Creation background

This poem was written in the 14th year of the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty (726). Li Bai went to Jinling (now Nanjing, Jiangsu Province) in the autumn of the year when he left Shu, and stayed for about half a year. In the spring of the 14th year of Kaiyuan, the poet went to Yangzhou. When he left, a friend gave him a farewell dinner at the hotel, and Li Bai wrote this poem as a farewell.
