Gao Peizhi’s former residence

The "Gao Family Courtyard" at No. 42, Xinglong Lane, Beilin District, which has gone through hundreds of years of vicissitudes, is one of the most well-protected residential courtyards in Xi'an and is a cultural relic protection unit at the provincial and municipal levels.

The Gao Family Courtyard is the former residence of Mr. Gao Peizhi. It was built in the middle of the Qing Dynasty and retains the simple and traditional residential architectural style. The house faces south and faces north, covering an area of ??nine points. It is 50 meters long from north to south and 12 meters wide from east to west. The building layout is three bays and two entrances. Street rooms, side rooms, halls, second doors and upper rooms are all available. The gate is made of raw lacquered wood, and a horse-hitch stake is erected on the side of the door. The reliefs on the two door pillars are unicorn bats, sika deer and other auspicious animals. The door of the passing hall is engraved with peonies, plum blossoms, swords and square tripods; the door of the upper room is engraved with the "Four Gentlemen" of "Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum". The tiger-head tiles on the house, the carved doors and windows in the courtyard... the brick carvings on the second door and its side door are even more exquisite, and the whole courtyard is full of ancient charm. It is particularly worth mentioning that the brick carvings on the gatehouse of the Gao Family Courtyard and the wooden components of the house are exquisitely carved, showing the typical local architectural decorative art style. The courtyard is completely preserved from the house structure and indoor furniture. It is rare to see such a complete courtyard in Xi'an today.
