Highway No 1 in California (HighWayNo
1) was named one of the 50 scenic spots not to be missed in your life by National Geographic magazine. It is also the most beautiful highway in the United States. Highway 1 runs through the entire western coastline of California to Los Angeles, passing various beautiful towns, beaches, and national parks along the way.
Driving yourself is the best way to measure Highway 1.
There are so many scenic spots on Highway 1 that few people can visit them all in one go. It includes: Silicon Valley, Old Fisherman's Wharf, Monterey, 17 Mile Bay Scenic Line, Carmel, Big Sur, Danish style town, Bixby Bridge, etc.
Although my wife and I spent 23 days traveling in the United States from mid-September to October 8th, and ran on Highway 1 for 3-4 days, there was not enough time to complete Highway 1. Of all the famous attractions on the list, you can only select some:
One.17 Mile Road
The 17 Miles Road Scenic Area is located on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula and is the highlight of the West Coast of the United States.
The 17-mile road is known as the most beautiful coastline in the world. It is built by private individuals and requires a fee of US$10.25 per car.
Here you can see the spectacular sea view of the waves crashing on the shore and rolling up thousands of piles of snow. 17 Mile Road is also a place where wealthy Americans gather. There are seaside mansions along the way, with unparalleled ocean views. There are also top golf courses for the rich. The ecological environment is excellent, and water birds, seals, squirrels, and deer can all be seen.
2. The town of Monterey
Monterey is a famous seaside resort in California. The most famous thing is its whale watching activities. On Fisherman's Wharf, there are several whale watching boat companies, which are basically guaranteed to see whales. The entire whale watching activity takes about 3 hours, and the ticket price is 39 US dollars per person.
The sea breeze in September was very cold, and even the jackets and fleece we wore couldn’t withstand it, and we were shivering from the wind. Fortunately, we managed to see whales, dolphins, and seals, so it was worth it. Most of the time, you can only see the whale's puffs from a distance, and at most, you can see the whale's tail briefly emerging from the sea.
Getting close-up photos of whales leaping out of the sea is purely a matter of luck.
In addition to whale watching activities, the aquarium is also worth a visit, claiming to be the best in the United States. The tickets are a bit expensive at 50 US dollars per person. You can see various marine animals and listen to the staff's explanations, which is a lot to gain.
The seafood pasta and oysters at the pier, plus French fries, are delicious and worth recommending.
3. Danish Fairy Tale Town - Solvang
In 1911, five immigrants from Denmark took a fancy to this place near the sea, and they opened up wasteland and farmed here. , built churches, set up schools, retained Danish customs and habits, and gradually attracted more and more Danish immigrants to settle here, thus forming today's Danish city.
The town is not big. We walked in the town for half an hour and walked around the main street. The sunshine, flowers, green grass, churches, and windmills made us feel like we were in a European fairy tale town. , inner peace and comfort.
4. Elephant Seal Beach
About 4-5 miles north of San Simeon along Highway 1
is the Elephant Seal Beach, where hundreds of them are lying densely. The elephant seal, just lying there, sleeping, basking in the sun. Some seals are playing and playing with each other, which is very cute. I was very excited to observe seals in the natural seaside environment at such a close range and stayed there for more than half an hour.
In addition to Seal Beach, seals can be seen in many places along the seaside of Highway 1, but the largest number is here.
5. The Art Town of Carmel
Carmel is a seaside town with beautiful beaches and is famous for its artistic atmosphere. There are many free parking spaces on the street, usually with a 2-hour time limit. The town is not big and you can walk around the main street in one hour.
There are many charming inns in the town, so it’s not a bad idea to stay for one night if you have time. There are also many specialty handicraft shops in the town. Under the enthusiastic introduction of the salesperson, we bought two pieces of handmade soap. They were actually from the British Lush brand and the price was better than in China.
6. Bixby Bridge
This is the world’s tallest concrete bridge. Built in 1932, it is the most photographed bridge on the West Coast. It is the bridge on Highway 1. Landmarks can be seen from time to time in American blockbusters.
7. Big Sur
The Bixby Bridge is the gateway to Big Sur. Before this, the residents of the Big Sur area were almost isolated from the outside world during the winter. of. The Big Sur area is home to many beautiful beaches, forests, and wilderness areas, as well as beachfront specialty hotels. It is an important scenic spot on Highway 1. When we drove here, it was already the end of our trip on Highway 1, so we didn't stay long and left in a hurry.
US Route 1 is extremely rich in elements, including big cities, various seaside towns, wineries, various marine wildlife, Spanish colonial culture, national parks, villas, golf courses, Castle etc.
If you want to play it all, I’m afraid 10 days and a half is not enough. Someone once said that if you have money and leisure in this life, U.S. Highway 1 is worth running 10 times. Although it's a bit exaggerated, this is a place I want to go to again.
