One of Lu Xun's representative works,
Kong Yiji's full text:
Kong Yiji
The layout of hotels in Luzhen is different from other places: they are all big counters facing the street, with hot water inside, which can warm wine at any time. People who go to work often spend four coppers to buy a bowl of wine after work in the afternoon and evening. This was more than twenty years ago, and now every bowl has to rise to ten pence. Standing outside the cupboard, they drank hot drinks and had a rest. If you are willing to spend an extra penny, you can buy a dish of salted bamboo shoots or fennel beans as a drink. You can buy a meat dish for a dozen pence. But most of these customers are short-sleeved gangs, and they are generally not so rich. Only people in robes walk into the house next to the shop, ask for wine and vegetables, and sit and drink slowly.
I have been working as a waiter at Xianheng Hotel in Zhenkou since I was twelve years old. The shopkeeper said, I'm too stupid to wait on customers in long gowns, so I'm going to do something outside. Although the customers with short coats outside are easy to talk to, they also have a lot of nagging, which makes people confused. They often have to watch the yellow rice wine scoop out of the jar with their own eyes, see if there is water at the bottom of the pot, and then put the pot in hot water, and then rest assured that it is difficult to mix water under such serious supervision. So a few days later, the shopkeeper said I couldn't do it. Fortunately, the person in charge of the recommendation was very generous. Without being dismissed, he changed to a boring position specializing in warm wine.
I have been standing at the counter all day, taking charge of my duties. Although there is no dereliction of duty, I always feel a bit monotonous. The shopkeeper looked at lost face, and the customers had nothing to be humorous about, which made people look lively. Only Kong Yiji could laugh when he got to the store, so he remembered.
Kong Yiji was the only one standing drinking and wearing a gown. He is very tall; Blue and white face, often with some scars between wrinkles; A shaggy gray beard. Although I am wearing a robe, it is dirty and torn. It seems that it hasn't been mended or washed for more than ten years. He is always full of big talk when talking to people, which makes people half understand. Because his surname is Kong, others gave him a nickname, Kong Yiji, which comes from the semi-understood word "Shang Da Ren Kong Yiji" on red paper. As soon as Kong Yiji arrived at the store, all the drinkers looked at him and smiled. Some shouted: "Kong Yiji, you have added a new scar on your face!" He didn't answer. He said to the cupboard, "Heat two bowls of wine and ask for a plate of fennel beans." I will pay a lot of money. They shouted loudly again: "You must have stolen from others again!" Kong Yiji opened his eyes and said, "How can you make people innocent out of thin air ..." "What innocence? I saw with my own eyes what book you stole and hung it up the day before yesterday. " Kong Yiji blushed and the veins stood out on his forehead, arguing that "stealing books is not stealing ... stealing books! ..... how can you steal the matter of a scholar? " The incomprehensible words such as "a gentleman's ambition is not poor" (3) and "a man's ambition is not poor" attracted everyone to laugh: the air inside and outside the store was filled with joy.
Listening to people talking behind their backs, Kong Yiji also studied, but in the end he didn't go to school and couldn't make a living. So I became poorer and poorer, ready to beg. Fortunately, he wrote a good hand, so he cashed books for others in exchange for a bowl of rice. Unfortunately, he also has a bad temper, that is, laziness. After sitting for less than a few days, people disappeared with books, paper, pens and inkstones. If so, several times, no one called him the note book. If there is no law in Kong Yiji, it is inevitable to do some stealing occasionally. But in our shop, his character is better than others, that is, he never defaults; Although there is no cash occasionally, it will be temporarily recorded on the chalk board, but it will be paid off within one month, and Kong Yiji's name will be erased from the chalk board.
Kong Yiji drank half a bowl of wine, and her red face gradually recovered. Someone asked, "Kong Yiji, can you really read?" Kong Yiji looked at the person who asked him and showed disdain. They went on to say, "Why can't you even get half a scholar?" Kong Yiji immediately a face of depression, face was full of gray, he said something. This time, it's all nonsense, and some don't understand. At this time, everyone laughed: the inside and outside of the store were full of happy air.
At these times, I can echo the smile, and the owner will never blame me. And when the owner sees Kong Yiji, he often asks him this question, which makes people laugh. Kong Yiji knew he couldn't talk to them, so he had to talk to the children. Once said to me, "Have you ever read a book?" I nodded briefly. He said, "read this book, ... I will test you." How to write fennel for fennel beans? " I think, do beggars deserve to test me? I turned my back and ignored it. Kong Yiji waited for a long time and said earnestly, "Can't you write? ..... I'll teach you, remember! These words should be remembered. When you become a shopkeeper in the future, you should use it to write accounts. " I thought to myself that I am far from the level of the shopkeeper, and our shopkeeper never takes fennel beans; Funny and impatient, he replied lazily: "Who wants you to teach? Isn't it just a word from the grass? " Kong Yiji is extremely happy, with two fingers long nails knocked on the counter, nodded and said, "yes, yes! ..... There are four ways to write back words [5], do you know? " The more impatient I became, I walked away with my mouth pursed. Kong Yiji just dipped her nails in wine and wanted to write on the counter. When he saw that I was not enthusiastic, he sighed again and looked sorry.
On several occasions, the children in the neighborhood laughed and rushed to the scene and surrounded Kong Yiji. He gave each of them one. After eating the beans, the child was still wandering, staring at the plate. Kong Yiji panicked, held out five fingers to cover the plate, bent down and said, "Not much, I don't have much." Straightening up, he looked at the beans, shook his head and said, "No more, no more!" how much is it? Not much. "So this group of children got separated in laughter.
Kong Yiji is so cheerful, but without him, others will live like this.
One day about two or three days before the Mid-Autumn Festival, the shopkeeper was slowly checking out, took off his pink board and suddenly said, "Kong Yiji hasn't been here for a long time. I still owe nineteen dollars! " I also think he hasn't come for a long time. A drinker said, "Why did he come?" ..... he broke his leg. "The shopkeeper said," Oh! " "He's still stealing. This time, I lost my mind and stole it to Ding's house. Did you steal anything from his house? " "What happened later?" "how about it? Write a defense first, then fight, fight until midnight, and then break your leg. " "What happened later?" "Then I broke my leg." "How about a discount?" "Why? ..... who knows? Maybe it's dead. " The shopkeeper stopped asking, but slowly calculated the account.
After the Mid-Autumn Festival, the autumn wind is getting colder every day, and it's almost early winter. I have a fever all day, so I must put on a cotton-padded jacket. There were no customers in the second half, so I sat with my eyes closed. Suddenly I heard a voice, "Warm a bowl of wine." Although the voice is extremely low, it is very familiar. No one was there when I watched it. Standing up and looking out, Kong Yiji sat on the threshold under the counter. His face is black and thin, and his figure is out of shape; Wear a worn-out jacket with legs crossed, put a cattail bag under it and hang it on your shoulder with a straw rope; When he saw me, he said, "Heat a bowl of wine." The shopkeeper also put his head out and said, "Kong Yiji? You still owe nineteen dollars! " Kong Yiji was very unhappy and replied on his back, "This ... will be paid next time. This time it is cash, and wine is better. " The shopkeeper smiled and said to him as usual, "Kong Yiji, you stole again!" " But this time, he didn't argue too much, just said, "Stop joking!" " "Make fun of? How can you break your leg if you don't steal it? " Kong Yiji whispered, "Break, fall, fall ..." His eyes seemed to be pleading with the shopkeeper, so don't mention it again. At this time, several people had gathered, and the shopkeeper smiled and said, I'll heat the wine and take it out and put it on the threshold. He took four pence out of his tattered pocket and put it in my hand. When he saw that his hand was covered with mud, it turned out that he had come with this hand. Soon, after drinking, he sat and walked slowly with this hand amid the laughter of others.
I haven't seen Kong Yiji for a long time since then. At the end of the year, the shopkeeper took off the powder board and said, "Kong Yiji still owes nineteen dollars!" On the Dragon Boat Festival the following year, he said, "Kong Yiji still owes nineteen dollars!" I didn't say anything until the Mid-Autumn Festival, and I didn't see him at the end of the year.
I didn't see him at last-maybe Kong Yiji really died.

1. How does the novel capture the change of Kong Yiji's face to create this character?
Analysis: Kong Yiji's "face" was written several times in Kong Yiji. The description of these "faces" plays an important role in portraying the character characteristics, promoting the development of the story and highlighting the theme of the novel.
The first time I wrote Kong Yiji's "face" was when he appeared: Kong Yiji's "face is blue and white, and there are often some scars between wrinkles". Kong Yiji was a lower-class intellectual who was badly destroyed by the feudal imperial examination system. He was poor all his life. He didn't go to school and couldn't make a living. In addition, he is too lazy to drink and unwilling to use his own labor to fight for survival, so that his life cannot be guaranteed and he is too poor to "beg". Therefore, he can't have the "red face" and "rich face" of a high-ranking official in the upper class, but only a "green white face". This description of "green and white face", combined with his "dirty and torn" gown, not only vividly reveals Kong Yiji's social status, but also paves the way for further characterization of Kong Yiji's character.
The second time I wrote "Face", it was when someone exposed Kong Yiji for stealing books: "Kong Yiji blushed and his forehead was blue, arguing that' stealing books is not stealing …'". Kong Yiji was originally a "green and white face", but when someone teased him and exposed his shortcomings, he blushed, tried to defend himself and tried to protect his "scholar" face. On the one hand, this description of "blushing" reveals that Kong Yiji was deeply poisoned by the feudal imperial examination system, on the other hand, it also reveals Kong Yiji's inner sense of shame, which shows that he is not a habitual thief, but only has to do it occasionally.
The third time I wrote about Kong Yiji's "face", someone asked him, "Why can't even take out half a scholar?" "Kong Yiji immediately looked depressed and his face was covered with gray." The description of this "grey" face shows Kong Yiji's despair and depression when he was teased by others because he failed to pass the examination for a scholar, and shows the rigid and pedantic habits caused by feudal education and imperial examination system.
The last time Kong Yiji's face was written in the novel, when he was "walked" to the hotel with his legs broken by Ding: "His face is black and thin, and he is out of shape." This "black and thin" face, coupled with his hands crawling "walking", can be imagined how he survived the torture and survived. When the shopkeeper made fun of him, Kong Yiji only responded to the shopkeeper's smile in a low voice, showing a "pleading" expression, showing his mentality of shrinking back, fear and despair after being destroyed. Here, the author paints us a bloody tragic picture of the victims of feudal system and feudal culture. At this point, Kong Yiji's tragic image has been largely completed.
Kong Yiji's complexion changed from "blue and white" to "red" and then to "gray" and "black and thin", which is the logical development of Kong Yiji's character. The author vividly depicts Kong Yiji's pedantic and numb character by describing the changes of the characters' demeanor. In teaching, we might as well grasp the special detail of Kong Yiji's "changing face" to analyze the typical image of Kong Yiji.
2. How does the novel show the plot that Kong Yiji's leg is discounted by a juren? What role does this plot play in expressing the theme?
Analysis: Some people say: "It is from this aspect that the author further exposes and criticizes feudal education and imperial examination system." Yes, Kong Yiji only took a few books, so he was beaten in the middle of the night and kicked out of the house. Even the dog of a rich family is not as good as it! Thus, the vicious wolf Ding, who runs rampant, is the direct murderer of Kong Yiji. The reason why he dared to run amok and harm the people of Li was indeed the result of his climbing into the imperial examination system and becoming a "Ding". But we can't leave the reality of the work to analyze it overhead. When analyzing Ding's Kong Yiji's Broken Leg, we must never ignore how the author expresses this plot. This important plot is neither directly explained nor depicted in the work, but revealed through the daily conversation between the shopkeeper and the drinker. The shopkeeper asked casually, and the drinker answered casually. One is careless and the other doesn't care. Kong Yiji has suffered so many grievances and disasters that people can't get due care and sympathy in the familiar Xianheng Hotel. On the other hand, no one stood up and expressed a little indignation and injustice at Juren's barbaric behavior. In China feudal society, the gap between people is so cold and numb, shocking and frightening! This is the climax of the novel, and it is also the place where the author is ingenious and particularly illuminates the theme. Therefore, we believe that it is more appropriate for readers to put forward the urgent task of improving people's ideological consciousness and "changing their spirit", saying that the killing of Kong Yiji by a juren is "a further exposure and criticism of feudal education and the imperial examination system", rather than saying that the theme of the work is finally revealed by the fact that he killed Kong Yiji without causing repercussions in society.
3. How to understand the "smile" of the "short coat gang"?
Analysis: There are two kinds of laughter in Kong Yiji: one is the laughter of long-sleeved characters and shopkeepers. This kind of laughter was crippled in Kong Yiji, and it was particularly exciting when it twisted on the verge of death. This laughter trembled with the cruelty of the exploiting class, and it trembled with the "coma and cruelty of creating and enjoying the pain of others". The other is the laughter of shorts. Although Kong Yiji wore a gown, it was "dirty and torn, as if it had not been mended or washed for more than ten years". His "standing and drinking" shows that he has not squeezed into the ranks of long-sleeved customers, but is similar to the short coat gang. The political status and economic status of the short coat gang and Kong Yiji are almost the same. So, what does the short coat gang mean by laughing at Kong Yiji?
Some articles think that the short coat gang's ridicule of Kong Yiji is a manifestation of the working people's contempt for Confucius and Mencius. It should be said that this is just one of the contents of laughter. The deep meaning of the short coat gang laughter goes far beyond this. Kong Yiji, a "bad karma native" who suffered greatly from the feudal system and feudal culture, should have received the sympathy of the equally unfortunate people. However, the "short coat gang" made him funny and happy, nicknamed him and laughed at his poverty. Kong Yiji's final appearance, in particular, was even more tragic. Kong Yiji broke his legs and climbed into the hotel with his bare hands. He was desperate, but the shopkeeper had to press the debt. In the face of this human tragedy, poor people are still one of the "laughing" newspapers. The author repeatedly described the ridicule of the short coat gang and expressed the idea of further broadcasting. First, revealing the "sufferings" of unfortunate people like the short coat gang is intended to attack the whole feudal system of cannibalism. Under the rule of feudal absolutism for a long time, feudal culture and Confucianism not only created such tragic figures as Kong Yiji, but also generally poisoned the oppressed people, making them numb, unconscious and even losing their basic sympathy. Lu Xun deliberately exposed this "disease", which just shows that it is not just Kong Yiji who needs to be "cured", but the whole society. Secondly, revealing the "suffering" of the unfortunate aims to awaken their consciousness. Lu Xun once said that the theme of his novels is "mostly taken from the unfortunate in a morbid society, aiming at revealing suffering and attracting medical attention". This shows that Lu Xun is not mocking the backwardness of the masses, but seriously thinking about and exploring the method of "healing", so that the masses can get rid of the shackles of feudal thought and shoulder the responsibility of transforming the whole morbid society.
4. What are the difficult sentences in this novel?
Analysis: (1) "Kong Yiji, you have a new scar on your face!" He didn't answer, so he said to the cupboard, "Warm two bowls of wine and ask for a plate of moxa beans." I will pay a lot of money.
The word "pai" here is a detailed and vivid description, which is worth appreciating. Pai was made under the circumstance that people laughed at Kong Yiji. It shows Kong Yiji's mentality at that time, and people's understanding is different. It is a common saying that Kong Yiji shows off his wealth in front of those short-sleeved gangs. I have a different view on this. The reason for this is the following:
First, judging from Kong Yiji's ideological character, he can't show off his wealth. Kong Yiji was a poor intellectual at the lower level who was deeply poisoned by feudal culture and imperial examination system. He firmly believes that "everything is inferior, only reading is high" and that "scholars are poor". Therefore, what he deserves to show off and has shown off is nothing more than his status as a scholar: he refuses to take off that dirty and torn gown that marks his status as a scholar, and he boasts four ways to write the word "hui" in front of the little guy ... he can't be proud of money, and he has no money to show off.
Secondly, from the occasion, he will not show off his wealth. Kong Yiji was ridiculed and teased as soon as he arrived at the hotel. It should be said that he was embarrassed, not complacent, and didn't even have the courage to reply a few words. You can only ignore it. How can you show off your luxury and show off yourself on such an occasion?
Third, he will not show off the source and amount of money. Kong Yiji was "too drunk to do it" and "to the point of begging", so he "occasionally stole something". Although all his money is stolen, in everyone's eyes, his money is unclean, and maybe he knows it himself. So even if he has money, he won't show it off in front of everyone. What's more, he only has nine pence. Compared with those who wear long gowns, he doesn't know how shabby he is.
How to understand this detail? I think we can look at it from two aspects:
(1) Kong Yiji this payment action, is he after being laughed at by others for no reason, in a very embarrassing situation, he also asked the hotel guy for wine and fennel. Kong Yiji was teased by the jacket gang. Naturally, he was bored and upset, but on the surface, he showed indifference and indifference, so he "expelled Jiuwen". So I think this detail is that Kong Yiji's apparent calmness and calmness masked his inner anxiety.
(2) Kong Yiji's "Paijiu Essays Big Style" is for my buddies, as if telling them: Nine essays, many essays, please read it clearly. It is intended to show one's "innocence", not to falsify.
(2) I haven't seen it yet-Kong Yiji is really dead.
This is Kong Yiji's conclusion. "About" is a probable judgment, and "indeed" is a real judgment. Generally speaking, these two contradictory words cannot be used in the same sentence. However, when we read this sentence at the end of this novel, we not only don't feel that there is a problem with grammar and logic, but feel that it has a unique flavor and a feeling of endless words.
The core meaning of this sentence is "Kong Yiji is really dead". "Indeed" is the affirmation of "Kong Yiji is dead" and "About" is the speculation that "Kong Yiji is indeed dead". Grammatically speaking, "indeed" is an adverbial that modifies "death" and "about" is an adverbial that modifies "Kong Yiji is indeed dead".
The above is only a static analysis of the sentence itself, and then we can understand why the author uses this set of contradictory words for dynamic analysis from the plot development described above.
In the middle part of the novel (that is, the part where the drinker said that Kong Yiji stole someone's leg and was broken), it has been said that Kong Yiji is "probably dead". But this guess was overturned, because after the Mid-Autumn Festival, Kong Yiji went to the hotel with his hands behind his back and had a drink. Since then, Kong Yiji has never appeared again. The hotel shopkeeper has been thinking about the nineteen dollars owed by Kong Yiji at the end of the year and the Dragon Boat Festival the following year, and will not mention it at the Mid-Autumn Festival, which implies that the shopkeeper has given up hope for the nineteen dollars, because the shopkeeper has guessed that Kong Yiji is really "dead" this time. As a waiter in the hotel, "I" certainly understood what Kong Yiji meant when the owner didn't say anything this Mid-Autumn Festival, and it was confirmed by "I haven't seen him again at the end of the year" and "I haven't seen him yet", so "I" finally concluded that "Kong Yiji really died". Obviously, the word "indeed" is inherited from the last article, and this narrative of Kong Yiji's ending completely conforms to the idea of "I" at that time. Judging from the fate of Kong Yiji, a tragic figure, it was impossible for him to get any other ending at that time: his leg was not broken and his livelihood was already difficult. Besides, after his leg was broken, he had no other way to live and had to die in poverty. The word "indeed" is the inevitable conclusion of Kong Yiji's tragedy. Then why use "about" to express the speculation that Kong Yiji is really dead? Because no one in and out of Xianheng Hotel has seen the scene of Kong Yiji's death, no one has heard of Kong Yiji's death, and people have never cared about him, so the waiter used a "probably" to express a guess when thinking about the tragic ending of Kong Yiji.
A form similar to this sentence can also be found in other works of Lu Xun. For example, in The True Story of Ah Q: "It seems that I really hit myself on the head"; In "Father's Disease": "He is probably something special"; From Baicaoyuan to Santan Yinyue: "It seems that there are only some weeds". This kind of sentence is regular. Generally, the word "really" or "conclusive" behind it is often an affirmation of a statement or viewpoint mentioned in the article, while the words "probably" and "like" in front of it are often the tone of indirect speculation.
The ingenious artistic conception of this paper
(1) This novel chooses a unique angle, and is written in the tone of the first person "I", a boy of 12 years old, which makes the whole text authentic and has a strong appeal. "Children's words are unbridled", a boy of 12 years old, has no prejudice or scruples about all people and things, so he writes freely, which is convenient for expressing the author's warm and cold thoughts and feelings.
(2) "At that time"-1918 The feudal imperial examination system has been abolished, and the social environment in which Kong Yiji lived no longer exists, and the characters and story lines cannot be unfolded. Stories written 20 years ago can better express the theme, thus "attracting medical attention".
(3) The first two paragraphs describe the human activity environment-Xianheng Hotel, and then let the protagonist Kong Yiji appear. The advantages of this arrangement are:
① Let the characters move in a specific environment, and the story unfolds in a specific environment. In this way, the full text is compact in structure and concentrated in plot.
② Such a snobbish, cold and hypocritical social environment has rendered us an indifferent social atmosphere, which indicates the inevitability of the tragedy of the characters.
Such a social environment with serious class opposition has laid a strong foundation for the appearance of Kong Yiji, a man who wears a "gown" and stands and drinks.
(4) What is written here is the situation of drinking countless times. The author takes several typical examples from life to write, which not only saves pen and ink, but also depicts the characters and expresses the theme.
(5) If a paragraph is used to describe the death of Kong Yiji, it would be too plain and frank, leaving no room for readers to ponder. Then, the depth and breadth of the theme will be seriously affected.
The mystery of "Kong Yiji"
1. According to Mr. Lu Xun himself, Kong Yiji, the protagonist of Kong Yiji, does exist. The man's name is Meng and he often drinks in Xianheng Hotel. People call him "Master Meng", and his behavior is similar to that described in Kong Yiji.
-Sun Fuyuan's "Mr. Lu Xun's Two or Three Events, Kong Yiji" "
Secondly, his real name is Meng, and everyone calls him Master Meng, so his real name has been lost. He studied, didn't go to school at last, and couldn't make a living. He was as poor as a beggar. He has copied books for others, but he likes drinking, and sometimes he even sells books, pens and pens. When he was very poor, he sneaked into the study to steal something and was caught. He insists that "stealing" books is not stealing ... He often comes to Xianheng Hotel for drinks and may live near the ground, but no one has ever known. Later, he put a sack on the ground and supported it with his hands to have a drink. When he came, he disappeared. (Chen Gensheng: "Choosing a New Machine of Inheritance and Integration-(Kong Yiji) From Life to Art")
3. The author's home is called "Si Qi". This man likes drinking and smoking opium, but he can write well. He often wears a shabby and dirty bamboo robe and a melon seed hat on his head and wanders around. He likes swearing, but he is often beaten. (Chen Gensheng: "Choosing a New Machine of Inheritance and Integration-(Kong Yiji) From Life to Art")
According to legend, there is also a man named "Mr. You Ran" in Shaoxing City. Because of poverty, he had to make a living by selling baked wheat cakes and fried dough sticks. Because he refused to take off his gown and shouted loudly, he had to follow other vendors selling cakes and fritters. The peddler shouted once, and he also whispered "yes", which is ironic. When the children in the street saw him wearing a long gown and carrying a basket, they all burst into laughter and called him "Mr. Ye Ran" in unison. From then on, "Mr. You Ran" became famous in Shaoxing.
"Mr. Ye Ran" strolled slowly to Xianheng Hotel after selling fried dough sticks, took out a few coppers, asked for a bowl of wine and a plate of fennel beans, and chewed fennel beans slowly while drinking. When the children saw Mr Ye Ran drinking, they rushed to ask for fennel. He gave one to the children until there were not many fennel beans left on the plate, then he covered the plate with his hand and murmured, "There are not many! how much is it? Not much ... "
It is said that this poem "Mr Youran" is the prototype of Kong Yiji written by Lu Xun. (Huang Daofu and Huifang: Xianheng Hotel and Kong Yiji)
