The first session, June 2009, location: Yekaterinburg, Russia, participating countries: China, India, Russia, Brazil.

This meeting officially launched the cooperation mechanism among the BRICS countries, and after the meeting, the "Joint Statement of the "BRIC Leaders' Meeting in Yekaterinburg, Russia" was issued.

The second session, April 2010, location: Brasilia, Brazil. At the first and second BRICS summits, the number of BRICS countries was four. For Brazil, Russia, India and China. The word "BRIC" is derived from the combination of the initials of these countries. In December 2010, South Africa was admitted as a formal member, and the "BRIC" was renamed "BRICS" (BRICS).

The third session, time: April 2011, location: Sanya, China. The highlight of this meeting was that new member South Africa participated in the meeting for the first time, and the BRIC countries began to transform into the BRICS countries.

The fourth session, time: March 2012, location: New Delhi, India. The meeting issued the "New Delhi Declaration". The meeting discussed the possibility of establishing a BRICS Development Bank, which it hopes will be on par with the World Bank.

The fifth session, time: March 2013, location: Durban, South Africa. After the meeting, the Durban Declaration and Action Plan were issued, and it was decided to establish a BRICS Development Bank and a foreign exchange reserve bank. With the theme of partnership between BRICS and Africa, the meeting held the first dialogue between BRICS and African leaders.

The sixth session, time: July 2014, location: Fortaleza, Brazil. The leaders of the five countries decided to establish the BRICS Development Bank, headquartered in Shanghai, China. The BRICS emergency reserve arrangement was established, and the meeting issued the "Fortaleza Declaration".

The seventh session, time: July 2015, location: Ufa, Russia. Focusing on the theme of "BRICS Partnership—A Powerful Factor for Global Development," the leaders of the five countries had an in-depth exchange of views on major issues in the global political and economic fields as well as BRICS cooperation. The meeting issued the Ufa Declaration and its action plan, and adopted the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy.

The eighth session, time: October 2016, location: Goa, India. Focusing on the theme of "creating effective, inclusive and common solutions", the leaders of the five countries adopted the Goa Declaration and signed memoranda of understanding and documents on agricultural research, customs cooperation and other aspects.
