Jinjiang Street 16: Socks Prospering Summer Socks Street

"Summer" is summer, and "summer socks" also refer to socks worn in summer. The origin of Xiawa Street can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty.

In the late Ming Dynasty, the middle and upper classes in Chengdu used to wear wool socks in winter and stockings in summer, also called oil lamp cloth socks. The latter is light and delicate, light and cool, comfortable and breathable to wear. Due to the warmer climate in Sichuan, summer socks are worn for a long time, and more and more businesses specialize in producing and selling summer socks, all of which set up shop in a small street near Zongfu Road. Over time, this street became famous. Everyone in Chengdu knows that it is a street specializing in selling summer socks, hence the name "Summer Socks Street". By the end of the Qing Dynasty, knitted socks had flowed into Chengdu, gradually replacing hand-knitted socks since the Ming Dynasty. The sock-making workshop on this street gradually withdrew from the historical stage, leaving only the past tense of recalling the origin of "summer socks" street. Instead, merchants specialize in selling woven summer socks, which can be regarded as the reincarnation of summer socks street in history. The woven socks sold at that time quickly won the recognition of Chengdu people because of their neat workmanship, uniform size and low price. According to "Overview of Chengdu", woven summer socks are made of many materials, including short single woven fabrics, short woven fabrics and foreign woven fabrics, and there are many kinds of 10. The selling price is also divided into 350 ~ 360 long socks and 240 ~ 260 short socks. It can be seen that the history of Chengdu people's pursuit of quality of life has begun, and a pair of small socks is quite fashionable and elegant.

Although the summer socks in Summer Socks Street flourished after the Ming Dynasty, the history of this street was not in the early Ming Dynasty. As early as before the Tang Dynasty, the organizational system of Chengdu was adjusted, and the eastern part of Chengdu County was transferred to Huayang County. The two counties are bounded by Xiawa Street, which belongs to Huayang County in the east and Chengdu County in the west. The newly established Huayang County Office is located in Fuzheng Street, and the Chengdu County Office is located in Xiawa Street, which is very close to each other. As for the name of this street in the Tang Dynasty, there is no textual research. I don't think it's the name of "summer socks". Otherwise, the origin of street names is not the Ming Dynasty but before the Tang Dynasty. However, there was no custom of wearing socks before the Tang Dynasty, and socks appeared in Chengdu after the Ming Dynasty.

Xiawa Street, according to the geographical trend, is divided into five sections, each with its own street name. According to the north-south trend, Shuwa South Street connects Qingshiqiao North Street in the south and the west exit of Litchi Lane in the north. During Guangxu period, it was called the southern section of Xiawa Street. The Aizhai wonton in the east of the street and the pot-stewed dishes of fat people were all famous for some time. There is a white elephant temple in the north of the street, and the date of construction cannot be verified. Jiaqing's "Huayang County Zhi Temple" records that the date of the temple's construction is no longer available. Qianlong was destroyed by fire in 49 years (AD 1784) and rebuilt in 58 years (AD 1793). It is also recorded in Huayang County Records and Temple View Table in the Republic of China, which shows that buddhist nun had the image of Pu Xian in the Ming Dynasty. It can be seen that Baixiang Temple was built at least in the Ming Dynasty. Wei Tuo Hall was originally built in the east of this street, and Wenzu Temple was built in the west. There is also an ancient well near Sanyi Temple, which is said to be one of the sea eyes in Chengdu. Because wells are often flooded, this street was habitually called "Huashui Street" by local people after the Revolution of 1911. On this street, there is a shochu workshop named "Quanxingcheng" which is the first in the north, and there is also an allusion from it, which can be told in another article.

The section from the north exit of Xiawa South Street in the south to the west exit of Sanshengci Street in the north is Xiawa Middle Street, which used to be the north section of Nanxiawa Street. This street also sells linen and rib, sheepskin, carpets and felt hats in summer. In winter, there are also vendors who deal in oil silk and oilcloth. Speaking of the felt hat of this street, it was famous in Chengdu as early as its heyday. The business households on the street are mostly divided into Beijing School and Shaanxi School. Beijing stores don't sell Shaanxi hats, and Shaanxi stores don't sell Beijing hats. Although they are in the same street, they fight with each other and make money with genuine products. The felt hats sold also have their own styles and styles, and a group of old customers with different hobbies chase sticks. Another feature of this street is selling semi-finished leather collars. Due to centralized management, its business was booming for a time. It is one of the two gathering places of leather collar, leather hat belt and sleeve cover in old Chengdu, and the other is in Zouma Street. On the west side of the street, there is a knife and scissors shop called "rotten signboard". As the name implies, the signboard of this store is extremely shabby. Its history is earlier than "Liaoguangdong" in Chunxi Road, and the quality of knives and scissors is also excellent. Can't help Wan'er, named "rotten signboard", really hangs a tattered shop, but sells fine products. The owner's mind is interesting, which is also a surprise marketing method at that time.

Not far from here is Zhuochuanyuan Sichuan Official Bank, which was founded in the 31st year of Guangxu (AD 1905) and was the beginning of Sichuan local banks. This was set up when Fanku allocated 300,000 taels of silver and invested 200,000 taels. There were 1000 Liang, 500 Liang, 200 Liang, 100 Liang, 50 Liang, 20 Liang, 10 Liang, 4 Liang, 3 Liang, 1 Liang 10 Liang, which were also the products of the New Deal at that time. At the beginning of the Republic of China, Sichuan military tickets were issued, and then copper yuan tickets were issued, stipulating that copper yuan tickets 1, 000 Wen and military tickets 1. In the fifth year of the Republic of China (19 15), the Luochuan volume was changed, and the military ticket was recovered by one to two, and then closed. 1936, the address was changed to Chengdu Branch of Sichuan Bank. There are many private financial institutions nearby, such as Jincheng Bank Branch at the southwest end of the street, Bank of Communications Branch at the east of the street and Meifeng Bank Chengdu Branch. Meifeng was founded in the early years of the Republic of China. After New China, it was the headquarters of Sichuan Branch of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang. At the east end of the street, there is the former site of the "Brothers Biography" Hotel. Owner Huang is the younger brother of Jin Ling, the owner of Chengdu's famous catering "Aunt Banquet". His cooking skills originated from his brother, so his business is booming.

Downward is Xiawa North Third Street, formerly known as Grand Cross Street, which was changed to Xiawa North Third Street after the Republic of China, and finally named Xiawa North Third Street (1997 and merged into Xiawa Middle Street). The Sichuan Branch of the Central Bank in the east of the street and the Christian chapel in the south of the street were the landmark buildings of the street at that time. Most businessmen in this street also deal in summer socks and groceries, but the quantity is not as good as the first two streets.

The second section of the northern section of Xiawa runs from north to Xinglong Street, formerly known as Little Cross Street. Guangxu five to thirty years (AD 1879 ~ 1904) was changed to Xiawa Street. This street concentrates on flags, umbrellas and bedding, and its business mainly focuses on making official ceremonies, table fences and chair cushions. Jiedong is a famous "Taishan Hall" in Chengdu, which is famous for its eye drops.

Taishantang Pharmacy was founded in Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty, and its style is east-west, with a row of five pavements facing the street. The middle hall is a rest place for customers, and the second on the right deals in decoction pieces and the second on the left deals in pills. Nave's gold-lettered signboard of "no price, no cheating" is just like what it says, which is a much-told story. On the left and right sides, there are plaques of "Benevolence is the sincerity" and "Harmony is the most precious", which show the management way of Taishan Guild Hall. Antique and elegant decoration creates a customer-oriented and people-oriented business atmosphere. During the Tongzhi period, the owner changed to Huang, and the business was doing well. By the Guangxu period, the reputation of this store had become a minor celebrity in Chengdu. In Xuantongyuan, Taishan Hall changed its name again, and it was renamed as "Taitangsan", indicating that this store is now a joint venture of three people. Since then, Taitangsan has experienced ups and downs and was once in trouble. Until 1932, a cholera epidemic in Chengdu took it three minutes to come back to life and regain its vitality. He was very ill at that time, and many people died. The funeral procession at the four gates lined up in a very critical situation. Later, due to its excellent curative effect on cholera, Taisantang's Baiyao was immediately sold in Chengdu, which made Taisantang, which was difficult to operate, embark on the road of prosperity again by adding Baiyao. In the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), Taisantang also made a lot of profits from the business with Tibet Lairong master Duomo for a single vajrayana pill. Coupled with the pilose antler business after 1934, Taisantang's business is booming, not only paying off the debts owed before, but also taking the opportunity to go up a storey still higher. For a long time, Taisantang has become an old brand in Chengdu with the same reputation as Tongrentang by virtue of its reputation and strength for many years. In the 15th year of the Republic of China (1926), Xiao Lujia and Xiao Haoran chose the west section of this street to establish the Shaw Brothers Hospital, which was later expanded into the Xiawa Street Hospital Building. It is difficult to verify when the Chen Temple at the northern end of this street was built.

? As of the east exit of Martyrs Temple East Street, the section connecting with Xiawa North Second Street in the south is Xiawa North First Street. The northern part of this street used to be Tibiaotang Street, while the southern part was Xiao Xiong Street. Later, it was renamed Xiawa North Street, echoing South Street. On the west side of this street, there used to be a parliament building, and on the north side, there was a Guo Xiang Temple. At the beginning of this street, there are many bearers. Later, due to the gradual construction of roads, fewer people took sedan chairs, and the industry declined. The most famous building in this street is the European building on the west side of the street. In the 27th year of Guangxu (A.D. 190 1), the Qing Dynasty set up a branch post office here, which was the first national post office in Chengdu. Since then, the history of Chengdu delivering official documents and letters in the form of "post station" has ended. Later, the post office was destroyed by fire. When 1937 was rebuilt, famous Canadian architects Morrison and Ye were invited to take charge of the design supervision. The red bricks used for building are all bought by Hankou, and the cornerstone is also a stone strip picked from Longquan Mountain. Even the connections between red tiles are connected in series with copper wires. When the new building is completed, it has a western style. The inlaid wooden wall cabinets on the second floor platform of the gatehouse are beautifully made, and the splicing and painting process is excellent. After years of preservation, the texture is still clear and the paint color is bright. It is said that as early as that time, the toilets in the new post building had been equipped with toilets, which must be the best in Chengdu. After the completion of the new building, Xichuan Postal Administration, which evolved from Daqing Post Chengdu Branch, was formally established, commonly known as the General Post Office. In the north of this street, there is also a branch of Chongqing Yuanfeng Zhengshao Hotel, which was very prosperous at that time. Qingfangzhai absolute vegetarian cakes in the east of the street are supplied to Buddhist temples and vegetarian restaurants, and their stores also sell them to the outside world. Because of its delicious taste and low price, it is also loved by the surrounding people.

Xiawa Street has undergone the baptism of history. Although it is not what it used to be, it is prosperous, but the scenes with the flavor of the times in the past have left a deep imprint on old Chengdu. For example, the "Overview of Chengdu" describes that "ready-made new women's dresses in all provincial capitals are sold everywhere in Xiawa Street, Zongfu Street, Xinjie Street and Hakka Lane ... A flowered skirt, such as Xiajiang Zhijin, costs 30 to 40 yuan. Five-color sculpture, 892 each. " There are also "clothing stores in the provincial capital all have the accumulation of summer socks street to promote the clothing Zhuang", etc., all of which are about the prosperity and prosperity of summer socks street in the past. Together with East Street, West Street, Zongfu Street and Hakka Lane, it once became the gathering place of foreign goods in Su Guang, old Chengdu. It is a new clothing store management area with the same name as Zongfu Road; Its leather goods are tied for the top three with Gulou South Street and Zongfu Street. Its boots and shoes, sheepskin and fur collar felt hat are second to none. There are also tarpaulins, oiled paper, crepe silk, table knives, scissors ... it is a symbol of prosperity from time to time. I witnessed the wonderful old Chengdu for hundreds of years.
