Why did an earthquake happen in Putian?

The earthquake affected many counties and cities in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces, and even Guilin, Guangxi, Tongling, Anhui, Lingling, Hunan and Shanghai. This is the first major earthquake in Fujian Province, and the only earthquake with magnitude of 8 in the southeast of China.
