Equally controversial is the judgment of this case. On August 9, Changshu People's Court sentenced He Qiang and other five people to three years' imprisonment for "gathering people to fight", among which Li Yifu was treated as a minor. The court held that He Qiang clearly knew that the other party was coming to make trouble, gathered five people himself, and prepared kitchen knives, sticks and other equipment to wait for the other party to arrive. Legally speaking, it is a crime preparation, subjectively, it is intentional. After the other party came, after the other party punched him, He Qiang immediately took out a kitchen knife and fought back. Objectively speaking, there was a fight, which belonged to armed gathering.

Family members and lawyers of He Qiang and others believe that the actions of He Qiang and others are aimed at preventing the injured from fighting back and belong to legitimate defense.
