Eyeliner tidbits:
This commentary is different from the commentary track that is usually the same length as the movie. The film historian Ginette Vincento mainly commented on and introduced three parts of this film. These three paragraphs include the opening part of the film, Sirian's torture of undercover, and the ending part of the film. Ginette-Vinson diagram not only analyzes the creative thinking and aesthetic characteristics of the director for a specific scene, but also introduces the background information related to film production. Although Melville had made the gangster movie Bob the Gambler before, he always regarded Eyeliner as his first gangster movie. Ghianni, the leading actor, has done well in films such as The Golden Helmet before, but compared with belmondo, he is not a star actor. Before filming Eyeliner, Sergey Gini was at a low point in his career, and some even thought that he would bring bad luck to Eyeliner. But Melville took a fancy to the tragic temperament of this ugly little man. The scene of female characters being beaten and punished in the film was criticized by some critics, which directly led to the gradual marginalization of female characters in Melville's subsequent films. Although there is only a short comment of more than 30 minutes, it is informative and worth listening to.
Step 2 interview tidbits
The material of these three interviews comes from the video materials of TV programs when the film was released that year. The first interview, lasting 4 minutes and 27 seconds, was recorded on February 1963. Mainly directed by Melville and starring belmondo, answering the host's questions about the film. The second interview, which lasted 7 minutes 10 second, was recorded in1June, 963. In the interview, the actor Sergey Ghianni talked about how he faced the dilemma of being a celebrity, and especially thanked Melville, the director who gave him the opportunity. The third interview, lasting 3 minutes 16 seconds, was recorded in 1970 1 month. Melville and Sergey Gini reviewed the cast of the film. The three interview materials are very precious because of their age, and today's fans can rarely witness Melville's style with their own eyes.
3. Interview with Director Bertrand Verne Bertrand Tavernier (15: 30).
Bertrand Verniere, a French director, once worked as Melville's assistant, and then transferred to the professional film criticism industry, becoming a writer of the Film Handbook and other publications. 1974, Bertrand Verne's first film "The Watcher of Sao Paulo" won the special prize of the jury of Berlin Film Festival. In this interview newly recorded by Standard Company, Bertrand Verne recalled director Melville and many things from the perspective of a film director and film lover. Bertrand Verniere participated in the filming of Eyeliner as the fourth assistant director. Bertrand Verniere laughed in an interview and said that she later turned to work as a manager to escape Melville's abuse.
4. Director volker schl & Schler; Interview with Endorf by ouml (13: 19)
Schlondorf, the leader of German new film and director of Tin Drum, started his film career as Melville's assistant in filming Father Leon Mohan. Eyeliner is his second film. In this newly recorded interview, Schlondorf recalled the shooting time and sometimes manic but charming director Melville. Melville transformed an old double-decker garage into a studio, challenging the tradition of French films with extremely simple shooting conditions and manpower. The play adapted by Melville is very interesting. He will cut the useful parts of detective stories into pieces and splice them into notebooks, and then edit them according to his own ideas. In the interview, Schlondorf also reviewed Melville's interesting casting process, unique shooting method and eyeliner shooting details, which is very worth seeing.
There is also a trailer for the theatrical version of the film in the tidbits. In addition, the booklet attached to the CD also includes the new review text of Eyeliner written by film critic Glenn Kenny.
