How to write a film review (2): With these terms, your film review will be more professional.
The most basic task of writing film reviews is to determine the theme of the film. Determining the theme is the basis of analyzing the article. With the theme, we can analyze the plot of the film and the degree of realization of the goal, or analyze how the film expresses the theme with specific plots, or compare and analyze several films with the same theme.
Refining the theme is the basic work of writing film reviews. A movie usually has multiple themes. If we can extract a theme from a good perspective and use it in connection with the human feelings and things in contemporary society, we will often create good self-media film reviews. But if you want to make your film reviews better, you need to do further artistic analysis.
Film, like novels and plays, is also an art. If your film criticism can be analyzed from the following artistic angles, it will make your film criticism more excellent.
The first is narrative analysis. Narration refers to "the perspective of organizing the plot according to a specific emotional, physical or intellectual point of view" (original P45). For example, all films about Napoleon's life have the same story. But how to organize stories, different authors have different ways. Some people will flash back from his last time in Elba, others will start from his birth. Some are from the perspective of omniscience, and some are from a limited perspective.
Your film review can analyze the narrative style of the film. Ask the director why he organizes the plot like this. What drives this story? Some directors will form a specific narrative style.
The most standard narrative is called "classic narrative", which is characterized by: 1, and the plot development is logical; 2. The ending of the film is clear, whether it is a tragedy or a comedy ending; 3. The characters are always the focus of the story; 4. The narrative style should be as objective as possible (original book P46). This paper points out the narrative characteristics of a film, especially a film with a different narrative style from the classic, and analyzes how it organizes the plot and the purpose it tries to achieve.
The second is role analysis. Regardless of the protagonist or supporting role, "the role focuses on the behavior of the characters and the theme of the film." First of all, we must analyze whether the role is true or not. If so, what makes the character so real? If it's not true, what caused it? What is the status of the role? What kind of values does it represent? Wait a minute.
The third is viewpoint analysis. Viewpoint is "the common vocabulary of film, literature and visual arts". Viewpoint can be summarized, which refers to the position you look at, and the viewpoint determines what you see; It can also be a specific viewpoint in a narrow sense, actually analyzing the shooting position of the camera; It can also be cultural and psychological, for example, the dentist's office in the eyes of children is different from that in the eyes of adults.
Viewpoint is usually analyzed by two principles: 1, when and how the camera created a character's viewpoint; 2. Pay attention to whether the story is mainly told from an objective point of view or from someone's subjective understanding (page P52 of the original book).
The fourth is comparative comment. This is mainly aimed at those adapted films. There are many movies adapted from novels, scripts and games, and film reviews should analyze how movies have changed the information and meaning of the original works, scripts or games. You can also analyze the differences between different films of the same director, the differences between different versions of a film and so on.
This level of film criticism analysis is more profound. But if you use the following terms in film criticism, it will make your film criticism very professional.
You may not be able to fully grasp the following technical terms, but if you occasionally use some of them in film reviews, it will make your film reviews look professional.
1, scene scheduling and realism
Scene scheduling is a French word, which means "everything involved in the scene". It refers to all the characteristics of movie images, that is, all the image elements independent of camera position, camera movement and editing, including lighting, clothing, scenery, acting and so on.
The author thinks that "tools and terms such as scene scheduling are the most important features in all movies". People often take everything on the focal plane as real. The author calls this phenomenon "realistic illusion", which makes people often ignore the analysis of scene scheduling.
In fact, everything that enters the camera is not natural, but is considered. If you pay attention to this, it will be a good article to analyze the scene scheduling elements in the shot, including venue, scenery, clothing, lighting, space and so on. We can analyze the contribution of these elements to the theme and plot.
2. Composition and images
The author pointed out: "When watching a movie, you see not only the scenery, actors and lights, but also all the elements recorded and shown. The scene is formed by images, which is the place where movies are different from dramas. " It is also a good angle to analyze the composition characteristics of a film.
Analysis of the composition of the film, the first is the analysis of the lens. The shot is "the image you see on the screen before switching to the next image" (page P62 of the original book). A shot can contain different plots and actions. Analysis of lens, including tone and color analysis, film shooting speed analysis, spatial perspective analysis of the picture, use of viewfinder and lens position.
Editing skill is an important aspect of analyzing lens language. Editing means "connecting two films (two shots)" and "usually editing will follow some kind of development logic or some kind of purposeful statement" (original book, P68). By analyzing the speed or rhythm of editing, this paper analyzes how the lens constructs the paragraphs and meanings of the film. There are many skills worth analyzing here.
Step 3 sound
The author thinks: "In theory, the use and editing of sound can be as complex and full of wisdom as images." (Page P77 of the original book) The sound of movies has many levels and uses, which can be actual sound or later dubbing; It may be a plot sound or a non-plot sound.
Some terms about sound, such as sound continuity, sound montage, ambient sound, overlapping dialogue, voice-over, narration, narrative suggestion, etc. Only by analyzing the use of sound can a theme of film analysis be formed.
4. Animation, 3D and New Media
About this part of the content, the author later joined. But this part of the author didn't speak well, and the times are different. If you write a film involving these technologies, it is recommended to abandon this part.
