Chien-Chi Chang was born in an ordinary peasant family in Wuri Township, Taichung County. Seven local families are all his relatives. /kloc-at the age of 0/0, my father decided to move his family to Taichung City. /kloc-The memory of living in the countryside before the age of 0/0 is imprinted on his mind all his life.
In Chien-Chi Chang's memoir The Disappeared Place, he wrote: "I left my village and childhood memories, but they will remain in my mind forever. I always think of my uncle, aunt, nephew and friends. I have never stopped thinking about my birthplace, but I am getting farther and farther away from it. I went to college in Taipei, then to Indiana, and now I live in new york. "
Chien-Chi Chang has been thinking about the relationship between man and separation all his life, which has become the theme of most of his works.
Chien-Chi Chang's thoughts are vividly expressed in his photo collection Chains. Chains is a collection of portraits of 700 mental patients. These patients are tied together in pairs, and this is their treatment. During the filming, everyone stood in front of the dark background and faced the camera. Most people in the photo tried to escape from the people at the other end of the chain, but they couldn't get rid of them.
Chains once participated in Venice Biennale (200 1) and Sao Paulo Biennale (2002) on a life-size scale, which immediately caused a sensation. The relationship between people expressed in this work actually coincides with Chien-Chi Chang's view on marriage. He expounded this view again in two photo albums-I will, I will, which describes the bride and groom who are at odds with each other, and Double Happiness, which records the current situation of buying and selling brides in Vietnam.
The life of illegal immigrants is another theme of Chien-Chi Chang's concern, which is also an extension of his concern about family and cultural ties and physical separation. Since 1992, he has targeted illegal immigrants in Chinatown, New York. They left their relatives in rural Fujian and lived a hard life alone in the United States. From 65438 to 0999, Chien-Chi Chang won the Eugene Smith Prize for Humanitarian Photography for this project. "I have a special feeling about people's separated lives," he wrote. He said that he had heard countless stories about these illegal immigrants before 199 1 came to the United States. "I found a different truth. Many China people have made great sacrifices here and lived a life of slavery and fear. " In 2008, "Chinatown" was exhibited in the retrospective exhibition of "duality" for Chien-Chi Chang's half-life career held by the National Museum of Singapore.
20 10 The documentary photo collection "Escape from North Korea" featuring North Korean stowaways won the 2065 438+00 Anthropology Multimedia Award. This work tells the life story of Koreans who left their hometown and trudged 3,000 kilometers in China to the new world to challenge their new life.
Chien-Chi Chang joined Magnum on 1995 and became a full member on 200 1.
