Someone found information about Ernst Haas.

Ernst Haas (1921-1986) was born in Vienna. He was once rated as one of the most creative 10 top photographers in the world by American magazine Popular Photography.

(A) embark on the road of photography

Haas embarked on the road of photography, which began with an accidental discovery. That day, when he was sorting out his father's belongings, he saw a glass negative taken during the First World War. Haas later recalled:

This reminds me of my father's darkroom, where he developed photos as if it happened yesterday. At this point, I feel a force pushing me.

The glass negatives left by his father aroused Haas's keen interest in photography. Later, when his brother asked him what he would do for a living in the future, Haas, who didn't even have a decent camera, blurted out, "Camera." So my brother gave Haas a 20-pound piece of margarine. At that time, Austria, which had just been defeated in World War II, was short of grain and oil. Haas used this butter to buy the first camera in his life-Lulai Flex from the black market.

Returning prisoners of war

1948, 27-year-old Haas joined magnum photos. This year, he published a series of news photos "The Return of Prisoners of War", which became an instant hit. Since then, his photos have been widely published in some major magazines around the world, such as Life, Holiday, National Geographic and paris match.

Haas is good at color photography and is known as the "color magician". He is good at observing small changes in nature and taking colorful photos. Once, he came to a hot spring full of fresh moss and algae of various colors to shoot. This hot spring is located at the bottom of the valley, and the early morning sun shines between the valleys, forming a radial light effect. Haas carefully observed and constantly captured the color changes, and finally took a wonderful photo.

New York

(2) "The face of a magical city"

Haas's most famous work is 1953 The Face of a Magical City published in Life magazine. This set of color photos, using phantom and abstract techniques, makes new york, an international city, colorful and bizarre.

The face of the magical city is the first time that Life magazine published a picture story with color pictures. To this end, the editor-in-chief of Life wrote an enthusiastic message:

A model in a shop in new york.

New york attracts people and challenges artists at the same time, because new york has been described by a large number of different artistic expressions, but new explorers are always looking for new miracles.

Two months, Ernst? Haas studies the illusory scenery of new york every day: colorful patterns and slightly swaying reflections. Haas turned all kinds of truth into unreality and injected life into inanimate things.

Life magazine usually only uses 8 pages to publish a photo story. In order to publish Haas's color photos of new york City, Life not only used Impression of Fantasy City as the cover, but also published these photos for two consecutive issues with 24 pages.

The publication of this group of photos broke the previous practice of shooting news and photographic stories without color film, and also changed people's concept that color photos are not art forms.
