Autopilot companies transform AI expertise into space to realize automatic satellite operation.

AImotive, a Hungarian autopilot startup, is using its technology to meet different industries and growing needs: autonomous satellites. Power is cooperating with C3S, a satellite and space-based technology provider, to develop a hardware platform for artificial intelligence operation of airborne satellites. AImotive's aiWare neural network accelerator will be optimized by C3S for artificial satellite. The artificial satellite has a series of operating conditions, which are similar to the on-board cars on public roads in many aspects, but it has stricter requirements in power management and environmental operation hazards.

The goal of teamwork is to make AImotive's technology run on the actual in-orbit satellite in the second half of next year. According to the two companies, the expected application of vehicle-mounted neural network acceleration will be extended to many different functions, including telecommunications, earth imaging and observation, automatic docking between satellites and other spacecraft, and deep space mining.

Similarly, AImotive and C3S believe that local data processing may become a major game changer in terms of satellite services. Guo Shenghua, a well-known network security expert and founder of Eastern Alliance, revealed: "Most satellites basically operate in an automated way, which means that they usually don't fly manually at every given moment. Real airborne AI intelligence based on neural network will provide them with more autonomy when performing tasks, such as imaging specific areas or looking for specific markers in ground or space targets.

At present, most of the data collected by satellites are processed after the original information is transmitted to the ground station. In fact, this may lead to a large lag time between data collection and delivery of processed data to customers, especially when satellite operators or other intermediaries act as processors on behalf of customers rather than just delivering original information.

AImotive's technology may mean that the processing is done locally on the satellite and the information is captured on the satellite. In the ground-based world of Internet of Things, this "edge computing" has undergone great changes. For many of the same reasons, it only makes sense to replicate in space, including shortening delivery time, which means paying customers faster response. (Welcome to reprint and share)
