Q: What is your main system configuration now? Why choose such a combination?
Ivan:
My main system is the first generation of second-hand 5D. Of course, a flash is also necessary. However, if the equipment on hand is better than some players who go to nightclubs to take pictures, maybe the other party will soon be able to buy me a complete system of lenses. (Laughter)
Why did you choose this system? In fact, I already had 5D2 when I bought it. However, due to the nature of my work, the number of pixels in 5D2 is still relatively rich and the price is very beautiful, so I didn't particularly consider 5D2 at that time.
From the nature of my work, it is necessary to have a full film, because the photosensitive elements of the full film can create a better sense of space, and the choice of lens group or flash in Canon system is quite diverse. Of course, the key is the color of Canon, which is more convenient for my personal post-production habits.
Q: Your main job is nightclub photography. What's the difference between this job and ordinary portrait photography?
Ivan:
Nightclubs are a very interesting environment. The light source of nightclubs is usually poor, and it is absolutely impossible to fill the light without a flash. But the job of nightclub photography is not only to shoot handsome guys and beautiful women, but more importantly, to make up naturally and to retain the unique atmosphere of nightclubs.
Even in some cases, such as when there is a DJ performance in a nightclub, it is more important to take a picture of dynamic characters and the light and shadow atmosphere on the spot than a picture of only making up the characters clearly.
Q: What do you think of the 5D camera?
Ivan:
To me, 5D is a eater. In all fairness, the 5D focusing system is not necessarily better than the entry-level new monocular camera. In addition, the focus I took over except the central point often has the problem of focus judgment (wry smile). However, from the previous experience of playing with a manual camera, I also developed the ability to quickly judge whether to focus with the naked eye. In addition, at least the central point is accurate, and some electronic system problems are not so important and there are insufficient machines.
However, the 5D is really just a cheap monocular machine, which can be felt from the texture of the fuselage. There should be no need to say more about the reflector. There are also some fuselage workmanship and assembly and 1D series are products of two worlds. Recently, the second-hand price of 1DMark2N is very good, which gives me the impulse to upgrade the more reliable 1D fuselage. After all, my 5D just fell to the ground a while ago because of some accidents. The fuselage, flashing lights and lens also cost a lot of money to repair, which is a bit painful.
Q: You mentioned earlier that you wanted to upgrade your machine. What is the reason for the upgrade?
Ivan:
The main reason is that 5D has been used for a long time. Considering the maintenance of shutter curtains and the aging of photosensitive elements, it is necessary to consider upgrading this matter. At present, we mainly look at 5D2 and 5D3, but the price difference between them makes people hesitate.
Q: What's your impression of 5D3?
Ivan:
Do you want to put aside the price (can laugh)? Simply getting the first impression of the machine is not much different from 5D2, because the overall design still inherits the 5D2 family, but I became interested as soon as I saw the focusing system, because the focusing distribution of 5D3' s 6 1 point focusing system is much better than 5D2. Of course, it's useless to have more, but it's still accurate.
In actual shooting, I set the focus to cross focus, because the distribution of cross focus is enough to meet my shooting habits, and the impression of actual use is quite good. The focusing system is very decisive and accurate, and it is almost impossible to judge the focus with the naked eye. This alone makes me feel that 5D3 and 5D2 are not the same level of fuselage.
As for the silent shutter, it is also a great plus for my work, because it can reduce the vibration of the reflector in addition to the lively occasion like nightclub. For example, I recently took a job shooting speeches. In the past, others took pictures on the stage, and the constant shutter sound was actually impolite to the speaker. The silent shutter solves this situation and does not affect the speaker's speech mood because of taking pictures.
In addition, JPG's high ISO processing method is more advanced than 5D2. For example, I shot almost the whole ISO3200 in the Toastmasters' meeting place, and I can complete the task without the aid of a flash lamp under the condition of weak indoor light source. In addition, for example, nightclubs take some wide-angle pictures, and the flashing lights are not so easy to fill all the characters. I even tried to turn off the flashing lights in a few cases. After turning on ISO to 12800, the thumbnail processing was barely available, which is impossible for 5D2, so the high ISO interpretation method, 5D3 is really good!
Moreover, according to my personal retouching habits, the skin color of 5D3 is neutral, and the overall hair color is very suitable for my retouching. According to my personal habit of retouching, the photos taken by 5D3 are more convenient to repair than 5D2. I changed my consideration of upgrading 5D3 from observation to serious consideration.
Q: So have you decided to buy 5D2 or 5D3?
Ivan:
This is really going back to the question of money. Although 5D3 can greatly shorten my retouching time, plus JPG's high ISO and silent shutter, the price is enough for me to buy a set of 5D2 plus several new toys (lenses). If I have enough budget today, 5D3 is definitely my best choice.
However, because of the experience of 5D2, the electronic system of 5D2 is not too serious, but it needs more time to compare with 5D3 and spend more time on retouching. But personally, I think 5D3 is qualified to change its name directly this time. Simply calling it 3D is not too much. After all, the progress of electronic systems alone has reached the working level.
5D3 is worthwhile for professional use. After all, after its focusing system is set up, it can almost cope with different professional photography occasions. In addition, the speed of 6 continuous shooting per second is enough. No wonder the price has returned to the level of the first generation 5D3. Although the price of 5D3 has not been lowered as that of 5D2, the functional level has been improved. Obviously, the customer base that 5D3 should focus on is different from 5D2, but I still have to consider choosing 5D3 or 5D2. (scratching his head)
Q: Do you have any suggestions on the choice of 5D2 and 5D3 for amateur photographers who are not working?
Ivan:
As for non-professional users, have you considered the necessity of 5D3? Of course, if the budget is enough, it is definitely better to buy 5D3 at one time. However, after deducting the focusing system and JPG processing logic, 5D3 can, and 5D2 is not too much. On the contrary, the price difference in the middle may be more practical for buying lenses.
In addition, why not consider the second-hand 5D2, because 5D2 can't see the purpose of this machine by looking at the shutter number. I'm worried that 5D2 is mainly used for video recording instead of taking pictures. If the video duration is too long, it will also cause some damage to CMOS.
