Hou Dengke's evaluation

Hou Dengke is an unavoidable name in the history of contemporary photography in China. His images, experiences and thoughts represent a group of conscientious photographers in China since 1980s. His ideas often cause vibrations inside and outside the photography world. Hou Dengke observed and tracked the survival, labor and fate of the laborers living around him with a natural, simple and practical image. From the perspective of a farmer in China, he left an image of rural life that was about to disappear in the last 20 years of the 20th century.

Photography became the last way for Hou Dengke to witness his existence, understand and think about social life. He photographed Mike, a migratory bird in the northwest. He always chased the hot sun like a migratory bird. He died of illness in 2003 and left us.
