What can colposcopy check?

Colposcopy is to enlarge the epidermis of cervix or genitalia with light source and filter, and make a clear examination of cervix and genitalia, so that doctors can observe the changes of cervix epithelium and blood vessels, diagnose whether there are abnormal obstetric lesions and determine the severity of the lesions. If necessary, the most accurate diagnosis can be obtained through colposcopy biopsy as the basis for treatment.

Colposcopy is mainly used to observe the cervical, vaginal, vulva and genital lesions of the lower reproductive tract. Because colposcopy can enlarge the focus by 10-40 times, there are no minor lesions observed by naked eyes, and biopsy can be performed under colposcopy positioning, thus improving the positive detection rate and assisting clinical early detection of precancerous lesions and canceration. If cytology is combined with colposcopy, biopsy and cervical curettage, the diagnostic accuracy of precancerous lesions and early invasive cancer can be improved to 92%, and early treatment can significantly improve the survival rate of patients. Therefore, colposcopy is an important means for early diagnosis and treatment of lower reproductive tract cancer. In addition, electronic colposcopy can also be used to remove vegetation in clinic. With the continuous development of photoelectric technology, photography technology and computer application, colposcopy is not only valuable in the diagnosis of cervical, vaginal and vulvar diseases, but also plays a greater role in tracking the therapeutic effect and further studying the etiology, pathogenesis and pathological process of tumor occurrence and development. Colposcopy can also identify some benign lesions and avoid unnecessary biopsies, such as inflammation, polyps, cervical hypertrophy, pregnancy hyperplasia, etc. Colposcopy can not only help reduce the chance of false negative diagnosis of exfoliated cells along the way, but also reduce part of cervical conization. Colposcopy can not only assist in the diagnosis of vaginal adenopathy, but also has its special differential value, and can also distinguish verrucous hyperplasia in lower reproductive tract sexually transmitted diseases.
