What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis, commonly known as scoliosis, is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, including coronal, sagittal and axial sequence abnormalities.

The spine of a normal person should be a straight line when viewed from the back, and both sides of the trunk are symmetrical.

If the shoulders are uneven from the front or the back is uneven from left to right, you will be suspicious.

Scoliosis. At this time, the whole spine X-ray should be taken in the standing position. If the positive X-ray shows that the spine has scoliosis greater than 10 degrees, it can be diagnosed as scoliosis.

Mild scoliosis usually has no obvious discomfort and no obvious physical deformity in appearance.

Severe scoliosis will affect the growth and development of infants and adolescents, making the body deformed. In severe cases, it can affect cardiopulmonary function, and even involve the spinal cord, leading to paralysis.

Mild scoliosis can be observed, and severe cases need surgical treatment.

Scoliosis is a common disease that harms teenagers and children. The key is early detection and early treatment.

Harm of scoliosis

1. Scoliosis that affect that shape and function of the spine

It leads to spinal deformity, uneven shoulder and back, thoracic deformity, pelvic tilt, short legs and poor posture, which affects mobility and other functions.

2. Spinal deformation that affects health.

It is easy to cause intractable pain in shoulder, back and waist, and even serious symptoms such as nerve injury, nerve compression, limb sensory disturbance, numbness of lower limbs, abnormal urination and defecation.

3. Early onset affecting cardiopulmonary function.

Autopsy results of scoliosis patients show that the number of alveoli is lower than that of normal people, alveoli expand or shrink, lobes or whole lungs accumulate, and the diameter of pulmonary artery is much lower than that of peers.

The thoracic volume of scoliosis patients decreased, and the thoracic volume of inspiratory and expiratory phases was lower than that of normal control group.

Scoliosis affects gas exchange, including local ventilation, blood flow, ventilation blood flow ratio, diffusion and so on. Breathing disorders such as shortness of breath and asthma are prone to occur and affect blood circulation.

4. Affect the gastrointestinal system

Scoliosis reduces the volume of abdominal cavity, and the adjustment function of spinal nerve to internal organs is disordered, which in turn causes gastrointestinal system reactions such as loss of appetite and indigestion.

In short, mild scoliosis affects the quality of life, and severe scoliosis can lead to paralysis and even life-threatening.

How to treat scoliosis?

At present, there are two methods for scoliosis: surgical and non-surgical.

Surgery is beyond the scope of this article, and there are various non-surgical methods around the world.

For patients with mild scoliosis, the general treatment is observation, and braces are used when the curvature is greater than 25 degrees;

In Europe, clinicians use "medical gymnastics" physical therapy to treat patients with mild scoliosis and low risk of progression.

Looking through the conservative treatment literature at home and abroad, clinical research shows that manipulation, orthosis and exercise rehabilitation exercise will have significant effects on scoliosis.
