How many questions does the author raise in succession regarding the "stupid" view of kindness? What is the function
Kindness
A popular question now - what are the benefits of kindness? What are the benefits of being kind? This is really a question worth pondering.
This reminds me of the story of the Chinese general and the Japanese orphan. In August 1940, the Eighth Route Army launched a large-scale attack on the Japanese invaders called the "Hundred Regiments Campaign." During a fierce battle, two soldiers from the army led by General Nie Rongzhen rescued two little Japanese girls from artillery fire. The news reached the frontline headquarters, and General Nie came to visit and take care of them personally, and managed to send the two little girls back to the Japanese garrison. At 8 pm on August 24, 2005, at the International Hotel in Beijing, Yang Zhongshan, the Eighth Route Army soldier who rescued Mihoko, and Mihoko finally met each other after 65 years apart. This is a good story of Sino-Japanese friendship. But there is another detail that the media did not mention, that is, the Chinese army photojournalist who recorded this rescue incident later lost his mind. Not long after sending away the little Japanese girl, the Japanese army conducted a raid and the Japanese soldiers released two civilian children. Boiled to death in the pot. He recorded all this with his camera, while also thinking about why we are so kind while the other side is so cruel. He couldn't figure it out and went crazy.
When I was in elementary school, there were two fables in the book, one was about Mr. Dongguo and the wolf, and the other was about the farmer and the snake. The two stories teach us that being kind to evil is just a kind of pedantry, a kind of ignorance, and a kind of self-blame. After reading this text, you will have a question: What should you do when you face hungry people or frozen people? Should we investigate whether this person is a good person? Because your kind rescue will be rewarded at any time with viciousness like wolves and snakes, and become as ridiculous and pitiable as Mr. Dong Guo and the farmer. This gives us a view that good deeds are rewarded with good deeds. That reporter acted like this because he believed that good deeds will be rewarded with good deeds.
But our world is not so fair. It is impossible that good will be rewarded with good and evil will be punished with evil. So the Chinese said: "It's not that there will be no retribution, the time has not come yet." So Buddhism says about reincarnation. If he practiced well in the previous life, he will be rewarded in this life, so he will be rewarded even if he is a bad person in this life; your practice in this life is for the next life. If you are a good person and do not get good rewards in this life, it is because you did evil things in the previous life, so you have to suffer. In short, it is said that good will be rewarded with good, and evil will be rewarded with evil.
The question is, if you don’t get good rewards for doing good, is kindness not kindness? I think: kindness does not need to be repaid. A sentence from Lao Tzu can be used as the best explanation: "To be born and to be an animal, to be born but not to have it, to do it without relying on it, to grow without killing it, is called Xuande." What is the most profound morality? That is to give birth to him, raise him, and protect him, but you will not possess him, nor take credit for it, nor be his master. In other words, you are kind to others without expecting anything in return, and you will not take the initiative. Asking for something from the recipient is kindness and great kindness. The sun is kind to the earth. Have we given the sun anything in return? Can we give him anything in return? "The best is like water. Water benefits all things without fighting for it." Benefiting all things without fighting for merit is the highest virtue. Kindness should also be like this. Kindness does not have to pursue benefits and rewards.
When we do good deeds, we should not expect to receive any benefit. What are the benefits of kindness? It can be said that kindness is definitely good for us, but we don’t expect this benefit to be returned to me.
When we meet beggars on the street, will you give alms to the best of your ability in the face of their eyes? Maybe you will say that many beggars nowadays are rich, many beggars make this their profession, some are pretending, and many disabled people are also pretending. Faced with these, I don’t have to give alms. You give charity, you don't give charity to a specific person, you give charity to your own conscience, you give charity to kindness. Originally, your charity was not to get something in return. You just saw that others were not living well and felt that you could help them, so you gave a little bit of charity. This little bit may be just one of your ice creams, or maybe just half of your McDonald's meal, but you have acknowledged that there is still kindness in the world, and you have voted for kindness. You don't have to worry about whether someone is taking advantage of your kindness. Great kindness is like water, water will never care whether it is being used by others. Sixty years ago, the reporter failed to see through this, so he went crazy; today's people have seen through this, but they no longer do good deeds, or when doing good deeds, they have to consider what good will it do to us.
No matter what, we must guard our conscience and look at the world with a kind eye. No matter what the consequences are after doing good deeds, stick to your kindness and let kindness, like sunshine, spread throughout every corner of our society.
