Common soft paper is also called sketch paper (not commonly used for personal shooting, but now it is usually HMI, tungsten lamp or Arri SkyPanel: color-adjustable led is very useful), which involves the means of modeling with light.

You should learn all kinds of light effects by watching movies. For example, strong light will emphasize shadows, and soft light will soften shadows, so you will use soft paper and white flags.
