Why can montage produce an effect of 1+ 1 greater than 2?

The artistic function of montage

Montage is a grammatical rule of film and television language, which has two functions: one is to make the film and television language coherent and smooth, so that people can see it clearly; The second is to endow the film and television language with aesthetic characteristics and make the film and television works beautiful. The latter belongs to the artistic function, mainly in the following aspects:

(1) gives the picture a new meaning.

The meaning of the lens group is far greater than the sum of the individual meanings of each lens, that is, "1+1>; 2 ".By reasonably selecting the fragments in real life and connecting them in a certain logical order, we can express the meaning that each fragment can't express. For example, here are two pictures taken independently:

The lens 1, a staring face with no expression.

Camera two, a steaming plate of roast chicken on the table.

Connecting these two pictures has a new meaning: the man is hungry and wants to eat the delicious food on the table.

(2) Give different meanings to the picture content.

A lens group composed of the same lens with different time sequence structures has different meanings. The following is a famous example of a typical montage creation experiment, which is also three shots. Different editing methods will produce different effects:

Camera 1, a person is laughing.

Camera 2, pistol pointing.

Camera three, frightened face.

This series of shots gives the audience the feeling of cowardice and fear of the protagonist.

Camera 1, scared face.

Camera 2, pistol pointing.

Camera 3, a person is laughing.

This combination of shots shows the hero's bravery.

(3) Create screen time and space

Through montage, the expression of film and television time and space can be extremely free, and is no longer limited by actual time and space, which greatly expands the field of expression. For example, the process of flower opening usually takes 8 to 16 hours, and ordinary people have no time to wait for observation. However, if you shoot it at regular intervals and then play it continuously, you can see the whole process of flowering, which is the conceptual difference between screen time and actual time and space.

(4) forming different rhythms

Montage is an important means to form the rhythm of movies. It organically combines internal rhythm with external rhythm, visual rhythm and auditory rhythm, reflecting the pulse law of plot development, making the rhythm of the film rich and varied, vivid, natural and harmonious, with strong artistic appeal. For example, when editing the titles of sports columns, the so-called "half-beat" method is often used: that is, when connecting different major sports groups together, all the splicing points fall in the process of movement.

(5) Organize and synthesize various elements.

Through montage, various elements of film art (performance, photography, modeling, sound, etc. ), visual elements (people, scenery, things, etc. ) and auditory elements (explanation, sound, music) can be integrated into a dynamic, continuous, unified and complete screen image combining sound and picture.

For example, when Beijing applied for the 2008 Olympic Games, it filmed the art propaganda film "Great Olympics, Great Beijing". In this short eight minutes, the director comprehensively used various modeling elements and montage techniques, showing the ancient and modern new Beijing and the Beijing people's desire and passion for the Olympic Games, which made great contributions to Beijing's successful bid for the Olympic Games.

(6) Generalization and concentration

Through the cutting and combination of shots, scenes and paragraphs, we can select and accept the material, select and keep the main and essential parts, and omit the tedious and redundant parts, so that we can highlight the key points, emphasize the characteristics and performance details, make the content clear, concise and decent, and achieve a high degree of generalization and concentration. In teaching films, generalization and concentration have important practical significance. Generally speaking, it is more useful to highlight the key points. When highlighting the connection between contents, we often use the method of picture in picture.
