What does sharp edge mean?

A sharp edge refers to an edge with a very significant contrast in an image. Sharp edges are widely used in digital image processing, computer vision and machine learning, such as edge detection, image segmentation, target tracking and so on, because of their clear edge contours and obvious transitions.

In the field of digital cameras, sharp edges are usually considered to have a positive impact on image quality. Taking too blurred photos is often unsatisfactory, and enhancing the sharpness of the picture can improve the quality of the photos, make them more vivid and powerful, and better present the artistic conception that the photographer wants to express.

But too much emphasis on sharp edges may also cause some problems. For example, excessive transition may lead to "sawtooth" phenomenon; Excessive processing will also make the image look too radical and lose its true and natural feeling. Therefore, in image processing, the degree of edge sharpness should be reasonably controlled according to the actual needs and scenes to ensure the undistorted visual effect of the image.
