Hasselblad Foundation was established in 1979, and consists of the legacy donated by Ona and victor hasselblad. The purpose of the foundation is to promote scientific education and research in the fields of natural science and photography. The foundation provides funds for many projects every year, one of which is the annual Hasselblad International Photography Award. 1989, the foundation was established in Gothenburg, Sweden, and opened the Hasselblad Center to the public, which held a series of exhibitions and cultural lectures. It is worth mentioning that the center also has a photographic research and reference book library for researchers and students, which contains rich pictures including the works of winners of previous Hasselblad International Photography Awards.

Hasselblad International Photography Award was founded in 1980, and has gradually become an important photography competition in the international photography field, with the main purpose of rewarding "the great achievements of a recognized photographer".
