GoPro Hero3 test notes

·There is no denying that Hero is still the best action camera in the world. It’s hard to imagine what it would be like if you didn’t use it when you have activities.

·Although there are many subdivision levels for shooting control, it also requires the menu to be opened to a very deep level to complete the settings. Obviously, the result of this is very unintuitive and feels a bit eggy. It hurts.

·For the continuous shots of Hero 3, after our testing, it is sharper and sharper than other sports cameras. It also surpasses the previous champion Contour+2.

·Hero 3 can be tilted at will while surfing. Contour+2 and Sony action cameras cannot do this. They can only be fixed in a certain place. The only problem with the Hero 3 is that you can't lock it securely in one position because after I went through a big wave it would get pushed down and I had to reposition it.

·Hell, Hero 3 actually comes with Protune! Hero 3 has made a lot of adjustments for flight mode photography. Things like contrast, sharpness and color. It will make the picture look prettier at first glance, but the price is that you sacrifice the quality of the picture, and a lot of details are lost in the shadows. Protune mode not only changes the variable frame rate and resolution, but also increases the bitrate, but without any compensation! The resulting image, while beautiful, comes at the cost of a closer look at the film. Fortunately, it generates the original video for you so you can edit it yourself later.

·The battery life is consistent with that of Hero 2. After nearly an hour of shooting, the battery is basically exhausted, which leads to another problem. The battery charge and discharge hour meter passes through three shape modules. Displays the remaining power without detailed information. If it is displayed in percentage, the effect will be better.

·The Hero 3 does not match the old waterproof case because its layout has changed from the previous model. So you may want to consider replacing the waterproof case. But here’s the good news – the new cases work with all external devices (e.g. bikes, skateboards, helmets, etc.).

·Hero 3 has mini-SUB and micro-HDMI interfaces. If you want to shoot at 120fps and then play the footage on your TV, it will look like it was shot at normal speed, so you'll need to slow it down through software. And these interfaces are not covered, so losing them is inevitable, but you don't have to have them, so it doesn't matter.

·Contains wear-resistant, Wi-Fi remote control start/stop mode from 600 feet away. By comparison, Coontour and Sony's smartphone apps that control via Bluetooth can only reach a distance of 15 to 20 feet. GoPro claims to be able to remotely control 50 cameras at once, but for that matter... we can't test it yet.

·Photography in low light conditions is a bit disappointing. We tested it on a bicycle (once at dusk and once at night). Hero 3 will automatically fill in the light for the picture, but it also adds a lot of noise. The effect of shooting at night is obviously inferior to that of Sony.

·Overcranking slow-motion effect recording performance is very good, shooting in 1080p, 60fps, and then slowing down to 24fps (30fps in the video) playback looks very good, you will not feel the loss of details . Also shooting at 720p at 120fps and then slowing it down to 24fps (30fps in video) will produce a 5x slow-motion effect, which is quite good even when viewed on a 1080p TV.

·The lightweight shape makes it one of the most comfortable devices to use out there

·The swivel lens so you can flip the video around is a welcome improvement.

·BacPacs combo includes Battery BakPak, which can double the life of your battery. The LCD touchscreen lets you instantly review photos and footage, making navigating menus slightly easier.

Should I buy Hero 3?

This is by far the best action camera we have tried. It's just that its software still has many shortcomings, so we currently give it the highest rating. If the above-mentioned issues are improved, then this is a device you must buy. If the problem has not been resolved, it is recommended that you consider it carefully.

Another thing that makes us hesitate is its price. At $400, it doesn’t seem cheap. The Hero 3 silver and white versions are priced at $300 and $200 respectively.

That said, if you think image quality is worth $400, then...buy it!
