Make the picture more stable. Practical evaluation of optical anti-shake of mobile phone

As the core component of mobile phones, IT 168 evaluation has always been a battleground for major manufacturers. Fierce competition has also greatly promoted the development of mobile phone photography technology. From the dispute of pixels in the functional machine era to the dispute of photosensitive element size, lens material and aperture size in the intelligent era. The names familiar to these photographers appear on the small camera of the mobile phone one by one. After these, anti-shake technology has also joined the smartphone family.

Generally speaking, there are two technologies: optical anti-shake and electronic anti-shake on mobile phones.

The concept of anti-shake was first put forward by Nikon Corporation of Japan, and in 1994, a pocket camera with shock absorption (VR) technology was introduced. The following year, Canon of Japan launched the world's first IS lens with image stabilizer. This is an optical anti-shake technology of lens group.

By 20 1 1 (just seven years), Panasonic P-05C became the first mobile phone supporting optical image stabilization technology in the world. Panasonic P-05C adopts its own MEGA O.I.S optical anti-shake technology, and realizes the image stabilizer function by magnetically wrapping the suspension lens. This technology can detect the slight hand shake when shooting, and then send the signal to the microprocessor, which immediately calculates the displacement that needs to be compensated, and then reversely compensates the lens group according to the direction and displacement of the lens shake, thus canceling the lens shake.

In addition, optical anti-shake technology is also aimed at photosensitive elements. The photosensitive element is placed on a bracket that can move up and down, left and right. The direction and amplitude of camera jitter are sensed by the gyroscope, and then the sensor sends these data to the processor for screening and amplification, and calculates the amount of reverse movement that can offset the jitter.

Simply put, optical anti-shake technology does not stop the jitter, but counteracts the jitter, so that the lens group or photosensitive element is in a relatively static state. In addition, optical image stabilization will not affect the image quality in theory.

However, due to the need to use additional components for optical image stabilization, optical image stabilization cameras are more expensive, and only a few flagship camera phones are used. Here, zero-cost electronic anti-shake appeared.

Electronic anti-shake analyzes the image obtained on the photosensitive element, and then uses the edge image for anti-shake compensation. Electronic image stabilization is actually a technology to compensate for jitter by reducing image quality, trying to strike a balance between image quality and image jitter. Apple's iPhone 5S uses a similar automatic anti-shake to integrate the clear parts of multiple pictures into a clear picture. This technology is very helpful in good lighting conditions.

However, manufacturers who can achieve this level of Apple are rare after all, so most mobile phone products have no optical image stabilization and no electronic image stabilization.

Having said that, how effective are these anti-shake technologies?

Practical evaluation of optical anti-shake

The author compares vivo Xshot with optical anti-shake technology and HTC M8 with electronic anti-shake.

Under the vibration of the fan motor, the optical anti-shake vivo Xshot is slightly dominant. You can see the shark position on the toy's shoulder, and HTC M8 has a slight smear. However, the focus of vivo Xshot is slow and inaccurate, which discounts the advantages brought by anti-shake, and HTC M8 performs better in this respect. Generally speaking, the two mobile phones can still be photographed clearly.

Let's look at the difference between anti-shake and no anti-shake. The author walked down the street and photographed vivo Xshot and vivo Xplay3S, which had no anti-shake function.

In this photo taken while walking, the advantages of optical image stabilization are very obvious. Although it can't completely offset the vibration caused by walking, at least keep the photos visible.

Finally, let's take a look at the role of optical image stabilization in video shooting, or compare vivo Xshot and vivo Xplay3S.

▲ Through careful comparison, the jitter amplitude of the video shot by vivo Xshot will be smaller and slower.

Editor's comment: Although it is not as good as professional SLR cameras and camcorders, the support of optical image stabilization really makes mobile phone shooting easier. Especially for small white users, it is better to have certain anti-shake ability than not to come at all. The premise is that the price of optical anti-shake mobile phones cannot be too expensive.
