Painting

Composition is a kind of grammar of art. Only with correct "grammar" can we draw coordinated and beautiful works and convey the author's intention to the viewer. From the perspective of the viewer, only by understanding the basic "grammar" can the connotation of the painting be correctly interpreted. Others only see long legs, beautiful breasts and big buttocks, but what you see is the composition, brushwork and style...these styles are more than ten blocks apart.

In addition, composition is also the basis of photography. Knowing how to compose makes it easier to take good photos, killing two birds with one stone.

Generally used to express the vastness and calmness of nature, such as mountains, plains and coasts, and is also commonly used in landscape photography.

Contrary to horizontal lines, vertical lines have a strong sense of tension, and multiple vertical lines standing side by side will create a sense of rhythm.

This is one of the basic forms of composition. Commonly seen in natural scenery composed of ground horizontal lines and mountains, rivers and trees. A picture composed only of horizontal and vertical lines gives people a sense of rationality, calmness and stability, but it will be different if it is replaced by diagonal lines and curves.

Special combination of horizontal lines + vertical lines. It also gives people a sense of calm stability.

Diagonal lines can express movement. If you only use diagonal lines to compose a picture, it will show a joyful and gorgeous dynamic effect.

The diagonal line is a special kind of diagonal line and the most stable diagonal line. The diagonal line is also the hidden baseline in the canvas. Many painters start from the diagonal line when sketching.

Straight lines are straight and rational, while curves are soft and emotional. Curved lines are suitable for depicting female portraits and tranquil landscapes.

S-shaped and C-shaped are special curve forms. The scenery extends in an S or C shape in a circuitous way into the distance, and the picture has a sense of rhythm. It is often used to depict rivers, paths, etc.

The upward triangle is the most stable, and the picture composed with triangles will appear even and stable. But success is stable and failure is stable. If the picture is too stable, the picture will lose its dynamic and vitality and look very old-fashioned. Triangular composition is also commonly used in portraits.

The triangle mentioned above is "solid", here is a hollow triangle, that is, a hollow triangle. The unique sense of stability of the triangle and the lightness brought by the hollow interact with each other, making the picture no longer look old-fashioned and heavy, but just stable.

Although the stability is not as good as the upward triangle, it still has a certain balance effect and has a relaxed sense of movement.

When triangles of different sizes are combined together, they will create a powerful sense of movement.

The rhombus is also a deformation of the triangle, and its properties are similar to those of the inverted triangle. The contact point between its lower part and the ground is small, which makes it appear stable and light. Hidden within movement is a sense of stable balance.

Spreading from a central point to the surroundings, this composition not only plays a guiding role, but also has a dynamic effect of openness, momentum and impact.

The hands join together to become the center of the picture, and the picture spreads to all sides.

Thanks to Zaddiker Hundred for suggesting that this painting by Jan van Eyck may be more consistent with a symmetrical composition. Sometimes a painting may involve multiple composition methods, and since there is no conceptual standard for composition, sometimes any idea makes sense. For the time being, I will keep this legend according to the point of view of "Basic Tutorial on Painting Composition".

Same as above, the intersection of the three hands forms the center point, creating an effect of spreading to all sides.

Objects in the distance gradually become smaller and eventually become a point. The movement of objects or lines is in an X-shaped layout, giving a sense of depth. Guide the line of sight from the surroundings to the center, which is suitable for expressing the sense of space in the picture.

Also called zigzag segmentation or zigzag composition. Generally, diagonal lines are used to draw the ridges of the near scene, and diagonal lines in the opposite direction are used to draw the middle ground. This is a perspective method that expresses distance.

View the panoramic view from above. This composition is different from the scenery you usually see. This composition can not only create a sense of distance, but can also be used to express wars, festivals, etc. with strong storylines.

A closed space surrounded by walls or trees. It can create a sense of security, but can also create a sense of closed suffocation.

Also known as frame composition. Peep the opposite view through trees, doors, windows, or gaps in buildings. This kind of composition has a strong sense of space, and the unremarkable scenery instantly becomes vivid. It is a very common composition.

In pictures with strong contrast between light and dark, light is often the center point of the picture, giving people a warm feeling.
