Shanghai tourism photographer

Teacher Su Xue is one of the top ten digital photographers and human geography photographers in the 3rd China. He is good at photographing the customs of South Asia and Southeast Asia, and is a contracted photographer for many magazines. He doesn't seem to like taking pictures of scenery very much.

Don't let your camera "peek" at Nepal.

Su Xue (wearing a felt hat) took photos with tourists on the streets of Kathmandu.

■ Traveler's document

Su Xue, a photographer of cultural travel, has a net name of "Old Demon". Since 2008, he has entered Nepal for in-depth filming 1 1 times and published The Story of Kathmandu. 20 10, photographer of Nepal Pavilion of Shanghai World Expo, won the "Top Ten Digital Photographers in China" in the same year.

Traveler's quotations

"It is not recommended to push photography too high and regard photography as a pleasure and hobby; Don't think of going to Nepal as a pilgrimage, just think of yourself as a recorder. "

As a travel photographer, Su Xue seldom takes a camera bag and wears outdoor clothes such as a jacket. The camera is carried around or put in a handbag, wearing ordinary clothes and slippers. "It's convenient to get in and out of the temple." Sue said: He hoped that if he threw it in the crowd, he wouldn't find it. He doesn't want to appear in the eyes of local people as a passerby. In Nepal or other countries, "when people think you are a passerby, few people will treat you as a friend."

No matter how simple a person is, he doesn't like being patted around.

"No matter how simple people are, they don't like being photographed by others." Su Xue once saw a group of tourists taking photos with cameras around a local woman taking a bath in the Nepalese street. Bathing in the street is a local habit, and tourists often think that there is nothing wrong with taking pictures at will, and regard it as a curiosity. Su Xue opposed this kind of "camera violence": "Their national character is obedient and will not resist, but at that time I saw that woman's eyes were particularly helpless." He believes that the premise of making a good film is respect, trust and integration.

In Chitwan, Nepal, many photographers feel that nothing special can be photographed there, mainly elephants, forests and one-horned rhinos. However, Su Xue filmed many different movies here, such as a Talu child reading under a kerosene lamp, which truly recorded their life scenes.

Everyone in Solaha knows Su Xue, and he is welcomed by the local people every time he goes there. He can go in and out of any Nepalese family at will and observe their lives closely, including washing his face, washing clothes, cooking and chatting. They do their own things naturally in front of his camera, so he can take many more realistic and natural photos.

"In fact, it is not difficult to build this trust. I always develop the photos of local people and give them to them in person or by international express mail; You must do what you promised, and you will bring them some gifts every time you go, and you will gradually become one with the locals. "

In Badgaon, he once met a little girl who could sing Welcome to Beijing in Chinese. She has a teacher, China. Su Xue took many photos of the little girl. A year later, he returned to Badgaon to find the little girl's home and gave her the photo. At that time, the little girl's joy and surprise made Su Xue unforgettable.

For the camera lens, Su Xue prefers Canon 24-70, because it is the lens closest to the human eye, and the film made has a sense of fusion. He doesn't like to keep his camera full of voyeurism.

Scarcity comes from the breadth and depth of discovery.

Su Xue believes that a good photographic work should be scarce, which comes from the depth and breadth of the theme. As a result of photographing Nepal's customs all the year round, Su Xue got to know many domestic and Nepalese scholars and officials. On March 20 12, Su Xue contacted local clergy through Nepalese archaeologists, and got several close-up shots of the living goddess Patan. Before that, only one German and one French photographer had filmed it. Su Xue entered the Living Goddess Temple three times in a week and photographed the life, study and religious activities of the Living Goddess at close range.

Many small places in Nepal also involve Soviet studies. He said that although Nepal has a small land area, its transportation is inconvenient, and many places with great cultural value are unknown to outsiders. For example, Kathmandu Valley is littered with many temples unknown to the outside world. In Gannakpur, which is 0/3 hour's drive from Kathmandu/Kloc-,Su Xue accidentally discovered that there is a 42-kilometer narrow-gauge railway here, and it is an international route. Before that, many people always thought that there was no railway in Nepal. In Rejiang, it is said that Su Xue was the first China native born in Rejiang, and the Taru people there still lived a very primitive life. In a small village called Croatia, some Taru people still live in tree houses, and the school classrooms are made of thatched branches without doors and windows. This scene has never been photographed by a local photographer.

"There are many small villages and towns like living fossils in Nepal. They have preserved the way of life of local people since ancient times, but due to the hasty pace, many tourists have no time and energy to enter these places. " Sue said:

■ Walker dialogue

Nepal is a living museum.

Beijing News: Many people go to Nepal as an extension of their trip to Tibet. Why do you have a soft spot for Nepal?

Su Xue: In 2008, I went to Nepal for the first time, and it was also my first time to go abroad. Before that, I was a money lover. How can I have time to go abroad? But when I arrived in Nepal, I found that people in this country had a high happiness index. They are not rich, but they live happily. Happiness has little to do with money. The natural scenery, religion and world cultural heritage of this country are very distinctive. In Kathmandu, there are seven world cultural heritages within dozens of kilometers of Fiona Fang, Fiona Fang, and there is no wall, where the local people live, die and die, giving people the feeling of a living museum.

Beijing News: Why do you prefer humanistic photography?

Su Xue: When I first went to Kathmandu in 2008, it was still a traditional city, unchanged by business, and kept its own cultural characteristics well. But now, there are many shops, ATMs and KFC on the streets of Kathmandu. It's only been five years, so what will happen in another five years? Maybe in a few years, they will also invite people out of the temple and build a wall to turn this place into the second Forbidden City. Many cultural relics are irreversible. If they disappear, they will disappear. I hope I can shoot more and record more.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, I am sitting in the bhaktapur durbar square Center in Kathmandu. I ordered two bottles of beer in a nearby bar and sat there until two in the morning. At that time, I thought it would be difficult to enjoy the moon with beer at the core of a world cultural heritage in my life.

Good photos depend on the person who uses the camera.

Beijing News: As a professional travel photographer, do you need to do a lot of homework?

Su Xue: A good photographic work captures the typical expressions of typical people in a typical environment. If you don't understand the local culture, you can't capture this typicality, and sometimes you will make jokes. I once saw a work with a Buddha statue as the background. A person with his hands folded, his back to the Buddha statue and his face to the camera. At first glance, it is very emotional, but anyone who knows a little about religion will know that a real Buddhist will never face the Buddha statue.

I once searched all the books related to Nepal in Wangfujing Bookstore, and bought all the books except those that were definitely irrelevant, just to know what was not in the Raiders Book. When I was writing the book "The Story of Kathmandu", Nepalese officials provided a lot of original materials written in the local language, which could help me understand the country well.

Beijing News: Is photographic equipment important to a photographer?

Su Xue: I don't think it's particularly important. I once put some photos I took with a card machine in Nepal on the Internet. Many people see the photo data on the website and say, why do you use such low-end equipment? Without these data, what would they think? The difference between mid-range cameras and high-end cameras may be at the limit, and there are other basic elements. A good photo is not because of the camera, but because of the person who uses it. Travel photography is a process of discovery.
