Review of the documentary "Empty Mountain"
When I watched "Empty Mountain", I was thinking, this Peng Hui is a genius. Not only does he have a good camera sense, but more importantly, he has perseverance and tenacity that ordinary people never have.
Many large panoramas are used in "Empty Mountain". Some are panoramas taken at different times from the same angle. Time has passed, early morning, dusk, moonset, sunrise, heavy snow, and midsummer. I even wonder if it was just shot by a camera crew? How can a group of people stay in a place without water, electricity, rice or vegetables for such a long time?
If it were me or my camera, it would only take half a day to escape... I remember that twenty years ago, I was still very passionate and wanted to make the film I was shooting well. Director. One day, for an early morning city shot, I took the team to the shooting location at four o'clock. But you need to climb high to get a full view of the city. The cameraman was not willing to go up to a small height. He thought it was unnecessary trouble... In the end, I had no choice but to provoke him and said, "You are not taking pictures for me, you are taking pictures for the Communist Party..." I used the provocation method. He just climbed up and took the picture...
Let’s go back to "Empty Mountain". It was so difficult for me to complete such a shot. If Peng Hui was not a cameraman, would he have been able to complete such a difficult shooting? Any creation requires hard work to achieve success. If you have to beg grandpa to sue grandma for every scene, can you make a good documentary?
As expected, Peng Hui is indeed a director, writer, photographer, and editor all in one! A man of many talents. At the 11th Hungarian International Visual Film Festival, the documentary "Empty Mountain" created by Chengdu TV director Peng Hui won the highest award in the video category of the TV festival - the "Jury Grand Prix". This is the highest award an Asian country has won in the eleven years since the festival was held.
...The protagonist held himself up to carry water in the distance, and his youngest son followed behind. The mountain road was extremely muddy. After walking a short distance, the protagonist's body failed. He fell on the slope. The son shouted beside him... The little son picked up his father, who was carrying water on his back, and helped him stagger back... There was not a drop of water left... The audience was worried for this family. .
The footage of the documentary proves that "I (the photographer) was present." And this comes at a huge price. No matter it’s windy or rainy, no matter spring, summer, autumn or winter, because you are there, you can capture real life, real life, and real personality.
If today's TV people are willing to take a look at Peng Hui's works, then today's TV will not be so bad. Today's TV people care first about money, second about houses, and third about cars. As for the rest, they don't care.
