The predecessor of the college was the School of Radio, Film and Television of Chengdu University of Technology, which was established in 1997. In 2001, it was renamed the School of Radio, Film and Television of Chengdu University of Technology. In 2013, it was renamed Sichuan University of Communication with the approval of the Ministry of Education.

According to the school’s official website in August 2022, the school has two main campuses and two internship training campuses, with a total area of ??2,397.95 acres, a construction area of ??827,400 square meters, and teaching and scientific research instruments and equipment worth 302 million yuan and 2.0308 million paper books.
