Feature film. Produced by Emei Film Studio 1987.

In the late 1960s, Xu, a female college student, was assigned to a small pharmaceutical factory as a bottle washer because she came from a middle-class family. Forced by the social environment at that time, in order to get protection and warmth, she married Zhu Shiyi, a small and powerful political cadre. However, the married life was not happy, and she suffered unbearable mental torture. After the downfall of the Gang of Four, Xu Chenggong, an academic, successfully developed a new antiviral drug, which was rewarded and reused by the factory. She also had sincere love for engineer Tong Shaoshan. However, due to her stubborn old traditional ideas and secular customs, she was suppressed, criticized and accused in various ways. She suffered, hesitated and struggled for this, and finally could not get rid of her unhappy marriage. Especially when she bravely confessed to Tong Shaoshan, Tong Shaoshan showed indifference, fear and retreat. Xu felt disillusioned and finally fell into that ancient deep well.

This film won the Best Actress Award (Pan Hong) in the 8th Golden Rooster Award in China on 1988, and the second prize (Pan Hong) in the 19th Italian taormina International Film Festival in the same year.
