I usually work in an art museum, and I will be exposed to more art exhibitions and works of art than others. Some of my family and friends, especially those who are not engaged in the art industry, will have a deeper understanding of some realistic works when they come to see exhibitions and talk about their works, and will also make their own judgments of "I like/don't like this painting" or "I think it looks like/doesn't look like it". But when they see abstract works, they will be confused. They will ask me, "What is this painting? Does this picture look good? " Even "Can this be considered art?" You who study art have a good time! "Such questions and sighs.
While explaining abstract art to them, I also summed up some basic problems that everyone will face, and then I studied and watched exhibitions and works according to my own art history, hoping to share with you some experiences that can easily understand abstract art.

First of all, let me define the scope of abstract art. We often encounter the question "What is abstract art". Simply put, works with simple lines and geometric shapes and mixed pigments are actually typical abstract art: you feel that you can't see what the artist is painting. This kind of work is relatively clear, but there is another kind that is more difficult to define. For example, Picasso's paintings, many people are impressed by those paintings with strange faces in Picasso's paintings, the front and side appear on the same face at the same time, or the whole scene is deformed.

For example, many friends have seen Dali's works, and there are absurd clocks and watches on the beach.

And Duchamp, who put the urinal in the art gallery and painted a Mona Lisa with a beard. Everyone has heard these works more or less, and they look and sound abstract.

They do break our general understanding of art. They are certainly not realistic or concrete, but what if it is abstract art? -in fact, it is not.
When explaining this problem, we should go back to the background of these artists and art schools. At the beginning of the 20th century, with the development of western science and technology, social and economic progress, some new philosophical ideas and psychological trends were accepted by artists, and even the subversive influence of the two world wars, a large number of avant-garde artists began to question "How should art develop?" . They pay more and more attention to the role of "people" as individuals in art, and they no longer regard art as serving other classes, but only as a medium to express their feelings.
Therefore, they no longer pay special attention to the shape of painting, but pay attention to how to get rid of the original bondage, express themselves in various ways and reflect the society. During this period, many schools appeared, such as cubism, surrealism and Dadaism. Abstraction is just one of them. We can say that Picasso, Dali and Duchamp are all modernist artists, but we can't simply position them in abstract art.
Picasso
Take Picasso as an example. He is the founder and representative of Cubism. The core of cubism is division and reorganization. The subject and background in their paintings are divided from various angles and then reassembled, breaking the visual law of "a little perspective" in traditional classical paintings.
What about Dali? He is the representative of surrealism. Surrealism is influenced by psychology (such as Freud). They think that dreamy, imaginative and subconscious, that is, surreal, is what the real world looks like. Therefore, there will be some things that should not appear at the same time in surrealist painting.
Although Duchamp himself doesn't think so, he is regarded as an important figure of Dadaism in the history of art. This school is avant-garde and has no particular fixed style. Artists only used various works against traditional aesthetics to protest against the war and bourgeois society at that time. That is, no matter what the artistic style was at that time, Dada would oppose it. Therefore, when Duchamp painted two beards for the classic Mona Lisa and put the urinal in the art hall, this anti-art feature was very obvious.

After distinguishing these styles and "taking them out" from abstract art, we can actually identify what abstract art is.
I will start with the concept, types, representative figures and styles of abstract art, first show you what abstract art is, and then combine the concrete works of representative artists of abstract art such as mondriaan, Malevik and Roscoe, and focus on sharing how to appreciate abstract art.
Mondriaan is composed of blue, red, yellow and black.
1922, private collection
Kandinsky, yellow, red and blue
1925, collected by the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, France.
Then I will tell you about Kandinsky's art story. This story is very important and representative in abstract art, and it can even be called the pioneer of abstract art. From his personal art story, we can also reflect the process of abstract art as an art type.

Finally, I went back to the present and China to share my views on Chinese abstract art and the abstract art created by some young artists today.

Then, please join me in the world of abstract art, and I hope you can get a different experience in these abstract colors and lines.
