A brief introduction to the story of grizzly bear
Elegy of bear lovers
In this thrilling documentary, it tells the love song about bears by wildlife protector Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived defenseless with grizzly bears 13 years before his death, and the film recorded his thrilling experience in the last 5 years.
1989 In the summer, Timothy Treadwell started his first trip to Alaska. He first saw the grizzly bear while camping in McNeill River National Wildlife Refuge. That experience inspired Tredwell's madness, and he decided to devote his life to protecting grizzly bears and their habitats. From 65438 to 0992, Tredwell started camping alone in katmai national park and preserve, and he often appeared when bears hunted salmon by the river. Tredwell recorded the experience of the first 10 years with words and photos, co-authored Among Grizzly Bears with his good friend and colleague Jules Palovack, and founded the Bear People's Association. From 65438 to 0999, Treadwell began to photograph Katmai's daily life with cameras, and even thousands of schoolchildren learned about the characteristics and habits of bears because of his explanation.
With Treadwell's growing fame, there are also pictures of these big guys playing on TV screens, and the living conditions and conditions of grizzly bear populations have gradually attracted the attention of the world. Tredwell is still far away from the crowd and lives with grizzly bears. From June 5438 to October 2003, the bodies of Treadwell and his girlfriend Hu Meiyi Gnad were found near the campsite in katmai national park and preserve, which became the first scene of grizzly bears cannibalism in this area. There are signs that they were attacked by grizzly bears and their limbs were dismembered. At this point, Tredwell finally dedicated his life sacrifice to his lifelong love for bears. Restore memory with video tape
In the early summer of 2004, Herzog visited the production company of producer Eric Nelson. While he was looking for reading glasses, he came across an article about Timothy Treadwell. After reading it, he was deeply attracted. His intuition told him that this legendary figure should be made into a movie. Maybe people shouldn't regard him as a freak like a beast. Behind his crazy behavior, there is valuable enthusiasm and obsession. Previously, Discovery Network had been paying close attention to the movements of Teddy Bear, and after his death, it co-produced a TV special program "Diary of a Grizzly Bear" with Teddy Bear on 1999.
In order to seize the best opportunity to shoot Alaska's summer scenery and grizzly bear activities, Herzog must immediately lead the film crew to Alaska to shoot. The film started shooting on September 4, 2004, and immediately rushed to Treadwell's parents' home in Florida after the scene was filmed, and finally moved to California. Meanwhile, four staff members are busy screening and editing Tredwell's live video. Because Tredwell's videos total more than 65,438+000 hours, and many of them are released for the first time, the work intensity is quite huge. Herzog later said: "All the pictures are too grand, and the ones without any editing are the best, but we have to make difficult choices."
It's finally time to tear the heartstrings. During treadwell's death, although his camera didn't open the lens cover, all the sounds were recorded. Although Tedwell's partner Palovak has agreed to adopt him, Herzog finally decided to let this part rest in peace forever.
Controversial Bear Man and Documentary Master
As an avid wildlife conservationist, Timothy Treadwell not only contributed to the protection of grizzly bears and scientific research, but also caused constant criticism and speculation before and after his death. The first is his motive. Is his passion and fearlessness for the grizzly bear population just to protect them? Or is it because of some psychological factor that he is far away from human society and becomes withdrawn and paranoid? Did his reckless approach to the bear cause his misfortune? National park officials have said that there are thousands of grizzly bears living near Kodiak Island in Alaska, and poaching has no effect on the number of grizzly bears. Secondly, his almost crazy recording and research methods, locals say, Treadwell lives with bears, breaking the natural laws that humans have been observing in Alaska for thousands of years, and wildlife scientists have been worried about it. They think it is very dangerous to dispel the fear of wild grizzly bears. Tredwell once described grizzly bears as our companions who are willing to play at will, but he didn't know that this would cause unexpected harm to them. In addition, many mysteries about Treadwell were uncovered after his death. Before his death, he concealed his true identity from his friends and lied that he was Australian. In fact, he was born into a middle-class family in new york. Before he began to protect the grizzly bear, he had a serious history of drug abuse and alcoholism and broke the law many times. After taking part in activities to protect grizzly bears, he gave up all this.
Werner herzog, the screenwriter and director of this film, was once the leader of the German New Wave film, ranking 35th among the "World's Greatest Directors" in American Entertainment Weekly. He was born in Munich on 1942 and spent his childhood in a remote mountain village in Bavaria. He has never been exposed to TV, movies or telephone. 14 years old, Herzog started hiking, 17 years old, picked up the phone for the first time. In high school, in order to make his first film, Herzog had to work as a night welder in a steel plant. After unremitting efforts, Herzog finally finished his first film at the age of 19, and his master film career began. So far, he has made more than 50 films with different themes and won many awards, including the Silver Bear Award at Berlin International Film Festival, the Jury Award at Cannes Film Festival and the Best Director Award. The new film Grizzly Man won the Alfred P. Sloan Film Award at Sundance Film Festival.
