How to take good photos in the city

Taking pictures in the city will bring some interesting challenges, including strange lighting conditions, crowded people, strong light contrast and interesting angles. However, these same elements can help you create some of the best photos.

Look for the unique elements of the city, such as the art installation of the cow parade in Chicago, which features fiberglass cows and is inspired by artists from all over the city. Take many examples of the same theme and make an interesting photo album to share with friends.

Looking for the unique geographical elements of the city. For example, if a city like Denver is located near a mountain range, an image containing the mountain range is taken. Or, if a city like San Diego is close to the beach, you can use it as the background of your photo story.

Don't forget to take real images of people who belong to this city. For example, a photo of an iconic storefront or restaurant will tell a better story if it features people living in the community. Make sure you get the proper permission from anyone who is used in the photo.

When you stick your neck out of the window of a taxi or tour bus, it is almost impossible to find an interesting angle to shoot the theme you choose. So, put on your walking shoes and check the target area up close. Find ways to highlight unique architectural details, juxtapose (such as city gardens with skyscrapers in the background) or eccentric streets or shops.

The city offers a unique bird's eye view. Go to the top of a tall building, parking lot or observation deck and shoot from top to bottom. Similarly, you can shoot high-rise buildings and other large structures from the ground. Try to take horizontal and vertical photos at the same time when doing the experiment. Some cities have companies that offer helicopter tours, which can provide an extra angle to shoot the city landscape.

Due to the strong contrast between shadows and light, large buildings may produce some harsh conditions. Look for glass buildings to create some interesting reflections. Try several different settings for multiple photos to ensure the correct exposure.

Some cities look better, or maybe they just look very different at night from during the day. For example, the national mall in Washington, D.C. lights up at night, providing a completely different visual experience than during the day. Consider taking some night photos to show the city lights, especially the buildings with unique lighting functions.
