Jilin Animation Institute, referred to as "Jidong", was established in June 2000. In 2008, it was approved by the Ministry of Education as a private undergraduate college. The school is an art college with animation tourism as the main body.

It is the first institution of higher learning in China that specializes in training animation and game talents. It is the largest national animation teaching and research institution in Asia and the largest single animation college in the world. Known as "the cradle of animation and game talents in China".

According to official website information in February 2023, the school has three campuses in Changchun, namely Gaoxin, Jingyue and Shuangyang, with a total campus area of 802,000 square meters.

Gaoxin Campus covers an area of 223,000 square meters with a building area of 235,000 square meters. Jingyue Campus is under construction, covering an area of 300,000 square meters, and Shuangyang Campus is under construction, covering an area of 279,000 square meters. The school has 10 professional colleges, 35 undergraduate majors, 1 Chinese-foreign cooperative education majors, 706 full-time teachers and12,704 full-time undergraduates.

The development of animation in China started earlier. Animation production began in the 1920s, and experienced the germination and initial development stage of 1922-1975, the rapid development stage of 1976-1999, and the original development stage after 2000.
