Photography of Truman Show
Transition is the way of lens connection, shooting technique?
What is real? When life becomes a drama, when all the truth becomes deception, when you find that your life is a performance, then you can only pursue the real life without hesitation or let all the lies have a perfect curtain call.
The film The Truman Show made up a fable about life and self-salvation. This film is thought-provoking and seemingly absurd, but it expresses extremely profound meaning. Such a clear high-budget studio work, however, due to the expansion of director metaphor and self-reference style, has added the label of author film to this film.
The whole movie is permeated with nostalgia. Truman's soap opera-like solo show (when Truman escaped, two security guards changed channels at the end of the show without attachment), as well as the clumsy, false and indifferent pace of passers-by, exaggerated hairstyles and costumes in the 1950s and 1960s, all reflected the nostalgic atmosphere of the film. Paradise Island, which is close to the future scene, also reflects its nostalgia from the side.
In addition to nostalgia, the depressed atmosphere can be said to be everywhere in the film. Controlling the viewing angle is used many times in the film. In some important scenes, the director used the angle of countless cameras around Truman to emphasize the observed and imprisoned state of Truman. At the same time, this kind of screen layout with shadows around the lens brings a depressing atmosphere to the film and the protagonist. The reason why the director doesn't use this framing method for every shot is probably to show Truman's own mentality, the life he doesn't know about external surveillance. The depressing atmosphere of the whole movie is also reflected in the "daily life" in the play, which seems natural but completely follows the script. Those pedestrians, businessmen, neighbors, etc. , including Truman's trademark language, all seem monotonous, which may also be understood as the director's dissatisfaction with real life. The director aimed the camera at the audience who watched the program many times, and compared the regular life of Paradise Island with the active and free ordinary life outside TV, thus making the film more depressing.
One thing that makes people relish this film is its ironic potential-criticizing the manipulation of society by new media and criticizing commercialism and consumerism. At the beginning of the film, the interview of Truman Show is explained through flashbacks, trailers and interviews with cast members except Truman. However, due to the inability to place advertisements in the live broadcast, "The Truman Show" has to rely on commodities to earn advertising revenue, which makes the audience in China obviously feel its irony, because in recent years, the placement advertisements of China films have reached the point of flooding. Producers make a profit by selling all the goods in Paradise Island, and at the same time promote the lifestyle of Paradise Island, which is also a criticism of the media controlling the mainstream of society (for example, Hollywood movies promote American values around the world).
If we study the relationship between Truman and Crystal, the producer of The Truman Show, we may think of religion. Truman lived in paradise island created by crystal, and lived comfortably, but was essentially controlled by crystal. This relationship is similar to the relationship between God and human beings in the Old Testament. Producer Crystal symbolizes God (controlling the rising and setting of the sun), while Truman symbolizes the identity of prophet and rescuer at the same time (saving himself in water can be equivalent to the Red Sea and escaping from heaven).
The double success of "The Truman Show" in business and critical circles has established the position of director Peter Weil in Hollywood, and such a deep film will inevitably occupy an important position in the film history. The director's ingenuity has made such a film likely to become a commercial assembly line in Hollywood, a work of art worth cherishing.
Finally, I want to end this article by quoting a line from the movie: "We are tired of actors' artificial performances and false feelings. We are tired of fireworks and fancy stunts. Although the world he lives in is false in some ways, Truman himself is real ... this is not Shakespeare's masterpiece, but it is true, and this is life itself. "
