Operation Red Sea is the first modern naval film in China, based on the real event of "Yemen's evacuation of overseas Chinese" on March 29th, 20 15. The China Navy Jiaolong Commando was ordered to carry out the task of evacuating overseas Chinese, and the soldiers were divided into two ways to rescue them; At the same time, the terrorist leader is planning an illegal operation, and the commando team must stop the story of interception. The crew went to Morocco to start shooting, which lasted four and a half months with a total investment of 500 million yuan. The film was strongly supported by the China Navy from the beginning of shooting. After some scenes in Morocco were filmed, the crew moved to Guangdong and filmed the rest on the warship.

After operation mekong, director Lin Chaoxian and co-photographer Yuen Man Fung collaborated again. As always, Operation Red Sea is very realistic in shooting. The film was shot in Morocco, North Africa. All the fires and shells were blasted with real explosives. Operation Red Sea's whole film was shot by Red Dragon 6K. When the film was released, we contacted photographer Yuen Man Fung for a comprehensive shooting interpretation. Photographer Yuen Man Fung told us: "When we are filming, outsiders usually think we are dangerous. In order to capture the lens, many tanks passed by me, but only such a lens will have an impact. Although it is dangerous, the audience will look cool! " So how to make the audience enjoy it is very important, and because of this, the crew and actors including him are not less injured.

Establishing style: pursuing realism and rhythm

? "Because Operation Red Sea's story is adapted from a real case, and director Lin Chaoxian prefers realism, I will pursue realism when dealing with the movement of lights or machines. I will not be too deliberate in lighting, and use natural light as much as possible, otherwise it is easy to lose this sense of reality. " This is photographer Yuen Man Fung's summary of the characteristics of the action images of the Red Sea. Because all the starting points of Operation Red Sea's whole film come from reality, in order to pursue the "actual combat" quality of the film, director Lin Chaoxian insists on the principle of "real shooting". Operation Red Sea, as a military blockbuster to evacuate overseas Chinese, contains many battle scenes. In order to pursue the effect, Lin Chaoxian directly took the whole crew to Morocco to shoot for three months, and set up a very realistic battlefield through scene simulation.

"The rhythm of the play in Nalin is generally faster. In movies, there are few literary plays and many action plays, and action plays require more rhythm, so I want to keep rhythm and movement in the image. This requires me not to shoot too steadily, but to master the rhythm, otherwise it will make the audience very tired. " How to keep the rhythm of the image requires the photographer to know when to choose what shooting method and what requirements to meet. You should know how to use the camera stabilizer, how to use the cannon, move the track, shoulder ... and control it well, otherwise every lens is moving, which will bring visual discomfort to the audience. So how to control the rhythm? "For example, there are several shots with shoulders. I'm going to take a camera stabilizer or a telescopic gun to do some buffering in the later shots. Only in this way will the audience not feel tired when the final materials are edited together. This requires the equipment to be well controlled and cannot burden the photographer. " Therefore, choosing red has become a very important choice for Yuen Man Fung.

Bad environment: awesome red, I like it.

"This time, Red Sea Action chose Red Wear 6K of Cook S4/i lens group. There will be more mobile shooting in Operation Red Sea. I need to shoot from a very special angle, and the red model is very small. I can easily put it on a tank or jeep to shoot some special pictures. Because we often shoot in the desert, there is no problem with this machine. I am very excited. Red really helped me a lot! It's small, so it's convenient for me to arrange plane seats to realize my idea. Although red is small, it is very powerful. There has been no problem during use, which really makes me fall in love with red. " In "operation mekong", we can see that Mr. Yuen Man Fung used a lot of seats and angles in the shooting scene, and Operation Red Sea's shooting was no less than "operation mekong".

One of the highlights of Operation Red Sea was shot in the desert. In fact, it is not difficult to imagine how bad the environment here will be, and the quality requirements for staff have reached the limit. For example, the weather is a big problem. It was sunny here before the shooting. After shooting for two hours, you will suddenly see a dark cloud coming, or a big tornado blowing for no reason. These factors are beyond human control. Many of these scenes in the film are not completely special effects, and many of them are problems encountered by the crew, so it is extremely hard to shoot this scene. "We need to take some chase shots, and then the dust rolled up by the tank every time it drives is very big. Before noon, there was mud everywhere. How to protect these machines and how to shoot the lens angle we want is a problem that we have to overcome every day. And the temperature difference here is very large, so it is very bitter and helpless. " In the desert, due to environmental reasons, the temperature difference between morning and evening here is particularly large, which may be less than 10. Workers may need down jackets, but when the sun comes out, it's too hot to hide. You can only put up some tents on the spot, or rely on some black paint boards to keep out the sun.

? "I just used RED ONE when I converted from film to digital, and I slowly saw EPIC and Wear appear. They all surprised me. I will also conduct some tests myself. To be honest, I see that red has been improving. In the digital age, I prefer to use Alai, but now I prefer red. In recent years, I have made many plays in red, such as "The Founding of the People's Republic of China" and "The Disappearing Black Boy" ... " When we asked him what his impression of red was, Yuen Man Fung told us, "If special effects are needed in the later stage, I will choose red because it has a higher resolution and can give a lot of space in the later stage." Although Operation Red Sea is a real shot, he also needs some cooperation in the later stage. Therefore, all the shots of Operation Red Sea at the scene are in red code 5K RAW, because when shooting 5K, there will be no laziness in shooting wide-angle shots. And 5K is very enough for the later period, so the big resolution of red is really powerful. "

Choice of lens: use telephoto to measure the force.

Operation Red Sea chose Cook S4/i lens as the lens. In Yuen Man Fung's view, this series of lenses are not as "sharp" as MP lenses, and are more neutral. "But we basically use zoom more. First of all, I prefer to shoot with a long focal length. Only in this way will my machine be easier to hide, and then the flexibility of change will be greater. " After all, actors are not from the martial arts background, and they need lens movement to help them complete the performance when shooting and playing. For example, if you shoot with a wide-angle lens, the effect will definitely be different from that of a telephoto lens. "Shooting with a long focal length will make the actor's fighting look more powerful and give people a strong feeling, and then cooperate with the moving lens to assist the actor's performance and help him move the lens." The use of this kind of lens can actually be seen in the series bourne ultimatum. Zoom lens can shoot such a lens: soften the background slightly, provide a new perspective and make the characters feel more profound. When an actor runs to the camera, it will make people feel that there is a sense of depth of field between the camera and him, as if he has entered the camera himself. I feel that actors still have a long way to go, and they will have a sense of urgency and despair.

Tone: reduce saturation and increase graininess.

Because the story of operation mekong takes place in southwest China, there are many green plants, which naturally determines the color of the film. There are many desert areas in Operation Red Sea's story, so there will be great contrast in the colors of the film.

In fact, the color of the city of Morocco is very rich, such as the yellow and pink of local houses, which will have some influence on the realism pursued by the crew. "The city itself is like this, and we have no way to change it. Then I don't think this kind of play needs too much color matching, as long as the picture comes out naturally and comfortably, but I think truth is more important. " In the later color matching, Teacher Yuen Man Fung reduced the saturation of many pictures, and then added some graininess in the later period, which would make the pictures look a little rough and weaken the lovely feeling of local pink. The stronger and sharper the graininess, the closer it is to the cool tone in color movies. In the picture where the color is occupied by a lot of graininess, the body movements and contours of the characters are particularly prominent, which is very suitable for highlighting the action language.

How the scene works: how the audience looks and how to shoot.

"People don't want to stop at the past main melody movies, because their pace is very slow. We want to make the main melody from the perspective of commercial films and genre films." So now photographer Yuen Man Fung thinks it is very important to control the rhythm. Only the moving lens can promote the rhythm, including the arrangement of seats on the spot. He used at least five seats to shoot every scene in order to capture the scene as much as possible. "My highest record is that I took a shot with 1 1 machine when I was filming" The Great Cause of Building the Army ". How to hide these 1 1 machines is very important. And the materials taken by each plane cannot be repeated. If it is repeated, it will be meaningless. " There were many explosions in the Battle of Sanheba in Building the Army. It took five days to prepare for the scene, including arranging explosives and arranging more than 200 explosion sites. If the shooting fails, it will be a great waste of financial resources and time for the crew. So it's very important in shooting, whatever you can catch is what you want.

"Our filming is generally seen by outsiders and we feel very dangerous. In order to capture the lens, many tanks will pass by me, but only such a lens will have an impact. Although it is dangerous, the audience will look cool! Only a small red body can support me to take such a risk. In fact, I like this way of shooting very much. It's refreshing. I like running around. I don't like sitting next to the monitor and watching it. Sometimes I even look at the camera if it's not good. I'll shoot it myself. " This is a ground shot. There are many aerial shots in Operation Red Sea. There may be three planes flying at the same time in a shot, and helicopters or 8-paddle helicopters are used in many places. As for why, there is only one answer. "This will give you a sense of speed, and the audience will be very powerful when they look at the tanks below."

When asked how to cooperate with director Lin Chaoxian, Yuen Man Fung said that his relationship with the director is like a football team. "Just like everyone plays football, when he goes to a certain position, I will consciously appear in a position to meet him. I won't say much, but I will often give him some surprises. " When shooting Operation Red Sea, the photographer and the director will hold a communication meeting before shooting each scene. At this meeting, all the shooting plans will be determined and the conversation will be very detailed. The director will clearly say what he wants to feel, and some particularly complicated places will also make story versions to determine the scheduling of the scene. But at the scene, the director Lin Chaoxian will completely decentralize, and the photographer can play freely and control all the shots and scheduling by himself. "In fact, he gave me a lot of space, and never said that I must do it completely according to his opinion, because the director also knows my style of doing things. I watched the director and the actor walk a scene, and I know exactly how to shoot it. If at a certain point, I need to highlight or strengthen the audience, I will choose to shoot with my hands. So the director won't ask me anything very specific, because I know exactly what this scene is saying at this moment and what I need to give to the audience. This is my many years of experience in shooting genre films, and I believe this is why he chose to cooperate with me. "

"Every time I shoot a scene, I already have a picture in my mind. I know when I need some buffer and when I need to speed up. Even at a certain point, this point may express a person's mood, or his mood. At this time, I need to shoot with my shoulder, so every seat on the scene is up to me. " If a scene needs five seats, Mr. Yuen Man Fung will set all the seats in advance, and then make clear to each camera what to shoot in this scene, and then all the staff will strictly follow this setting and practice. "Sometimes the director wants to make changes on the spot. I will first look at his scheduling and then allocate the machine, so as to give him a new plan, focusing on the director's scheduling, and then how to do it."
