What should I do if the camera lens is moldy?
In order to improve the performance of modern optical lenses, multiple layers of thin films made of polymer materials are coated on the lens surface. This layer of synthetic substance provides rich nutrition for the growth and reproduction of mold. Mold decomposes the components of the film on the surface of the optical lens to grow and reproduce, and hyphae diffuse in a dendritic manner on the surface of the lens, which makes the light transmission and imaging performance of the lens worse until the hyphae cover the whole lens.
Mold can also use inorganic salts in lens glass to provide nutrition, so hyphae also erode into the glass vertically and develop through infiltration. Optical lenses are generally composed of multiple lenses. Mold hyphae not only grow on the surface of the lens, but also spread to the back of the lens through the edge of the lens, so that the mold on both sides of the lens can not be removed. Moreover, mold spreads among multiple lenses by spreading and spraying spores, which makes the lenses lose their use value and cannot be preserved, leading to scrapping.
What should I do if the camera lens is moldy?
In the initial stage of lens surface replication, mold is not easy to observe with naked eyes. When it is visible to the naked eye, it has generally caused some damage. If found in time, you can clean the lens surface with special medicine. Later, the hypha has cut into the vitreous body of the lens, and even if it is cleaned, the cutting injury caused by it cannot be made up.
For the lens that has invaded the back of the lens, although the lens can also be disassembled for cleaning, the loss caused is still irreparable, and the optical lens has been precisely adjusted before leaving the factory. Due to the lack of technical conditions in general repair shops, the performance of lenses removed and put back will be affected. In addition, the cost of cleaning the lens is very high. Take the camera lens as an example, the cleaning cost is sometimes as high as 30% of the lens itself. In addition, if the cleaning is not thorough, it will not be easy to find at that time, and it will recur in the future.
Precautions for camera lens storage
Don't store the camera in a wooden cabinet, because wood absorbs moisture easily in the rainy season, and it will easily lead to mildew of the camera lens after a long time. Don't store the camera in an iron cabinet. Although the iron cabinet itself will not absorb moisture, it is difficult to emit moisture in such a closed environment. Once the camera is wet, the lens will be moldy.
Don't use holsters, suitcases and towels to store cameras. Leather and cotton cloth absorb moisture very easily, and it is better to release water slowly in a dry environment. Don't leave the camera in the camera bag for too long. Usually the camera bag is full of sponges, which are easy to absorb moisture. In addition, camera bags are generally made of synthetic materials, which can prevent humid air from the external environment from entering the camera bag, but also prevent moisture from being emitted from the camera bag.
