How to crop a circular image in Photoshop Usually when we crop a picture, we can only crop the picture into a square. In this tutorial, we'll learn how to crop an image into a circle using Photoshop!
Here are the final renderings, with transparency all around, you can easily upload them to the web, or place them inside another design:
First in Photoshop Open your image in . Here are the materials I used:
If we check that our image is on the "Background" layer in the Layers panel:
Before cropping the image into a circle , we first need to convert the "background" layer into a normal layer. The reason is that we need to surround our image with transparency, but Photoshop doesn't allow the background layer to be transparent.
To convert the background layer into a normal layer, all we need to do is rename it. In Photoshop CC, just click the lock icon to the right of the Background layer in the Layers panel. In Photoshop CS6 or earlier, hold down the Alt (Win)/Option (Mac) key on your keyboard and double-click the "Background" layer.
Photoshop immediately renames the layer from "Background" to "Layer 0". Just like this, we convert it into a normal layer, which works to our advantage:
Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the toolbar. By default, the Elliptical Marquee Tool is nested behind the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Right-click the Rectangular Marquee Tool and select the Elliptical Marquee Tool from the pop-up menu:
Using the Elliptical Marquee Tool, click inside the image and drag out the ellipse to select the outline. To force the outline to be a perfect circle, hold down the Shift key on your keyboard while dragging. Don't worry about getting the circle's position correct, as we'll move it in the next step. Now, just make sure the circle is large enough to enclose the area you want to keep.
When finished, release the mouse button and then the Shift key. Be sure to release the mouse button first, then hold down the Shift key or select the outline to automatically return to the oval shape:
Hold down the Shift key while dragging the circle to select the outline.
If you don't draw the selection outline in the correct location, simply click inside the selection outline and drag it to that location. Here, I moved it so that the young woman's face is in the center of the circle. This is an area I want to preserve. The rest of the image will be cropped:
For now, we have the area inside the circle selected. What we really need is to select the area outside the circle.
To deselect the area within the circle and select everything around it, go to the selection menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen and select Invert:
After inverting the selection , press the /Delete key on your keyboard to delete the area around the circle. Fill the area with a Photoshop checkerboard pattern, which is how Photoshop represents transparency:
We no longer need our selection outline, so we want to delete it until we select the menu and then select Deselect:
p>To crop an image around a circle and remove all transparent areas around it, go to the Image menu and select Trim:
In the Crop dialog box, select Transparent pixels on top. Then make sure Top, Bottom, Left and Right are all selected at the bottom (they should be the defaults):
Select "Transparent Pixels" in the Trim dialog box.
Click OK to close the Trim dialog box. Photoshop immediately trims the surrounding transparent area, allowing us to crop the image into a circle:
The image is now cropped into a circle.
We usually save photos as JPEG files, but JPEG does not support transparency. To keep the corners transparent and avoid filling them with white, save the cropped image as a PNG file that supports transparency.
To save, go to the File menu and select Save As:
In the Save As dialog box, set the Format option to PNG. Name the file and choose a storage location, then click Save:
When Photoshop asks you to set PNG options, you can safely leave them at their defaults. Click OK to save the image:
This is how to easily crop an image into a circle using the Elliptical Marquee Tool in Photoshop. You can apply saved PNG images anywhere.
