What's good about a pigeon's mouth?
Text/Chen Wenbin A homing pigeon enthusiast wrote to the editorial department that it is common in the pigeon market that some homing pigeon enthusiasts always open their pigeons' mouths and observe them carefully when choosing pigeons. He said that regarding the identification of pigeons, some people have seen eyes, wings and chest muscles, but they have never seen their mouths. The question raised by this pigeon lover is very interesting. I think this problem is not only confusing for novice pigeon breeders, but even some senior pigeon breeders with many years of experience may not be able to make it clear. In fact, observing the pigeon's mouth is an important link to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of racing pigeons. Observing the pigeon's mouth has two meanings: first, by observing the pigeon's mouth, you can find out whether the pigeon is sick or not. Choosing pigeons in the pigeon market must not be ignored, otherwise it will cost a little money to bring sick pigeons back to the shed and it will cause great infection. Secondly, the pigeon's mouth "looks good" is its "valve". Because when we say pigeons, we mean racing pigeons. Whether it is an ornamental pigeon or a meat pigeon. For racing pigeons, this requirement is quite strict. We know that the mission of racing pigeons is to participate in competitions, return to their nests quickly from hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away, and win honors and trophies for their pigeon owners. Whether racing pigeons can return home quickly depends on excellent pedigree, good management and proper training, and the role of "valve" can not be underestimated. So where is the valve? As long as the pigeon's mouth is broken, the "valve" is between the root of the tongue and the respiratory tract. Now you should understand why pigeons' mouths are "beautiful". In order to further understand the problem of "valve", we must first understand the types, shapes, advantages and disadvantages of "valve". Generally speaking, researchers believe that "valves" have four types and nine shapes. The first one is a square or a triangle connected to the back of the square. The second is a rectangle or a rectangle with a triangle behind it or a rectangle with a triangle in front of it, which is better. The third type is jujube stone or jujube stone, with triangle in front, which is the least ideal shape; The fourth is a diamond or a triangle connected in front of a diamond. Note that this is the best shape of the "valve"! Because this shape of the valve will leave a certain gap no matter how it is closed. Secondly, after knowing the best shape of the valve, we must ask why the diamond shape is the best and the jujube stone shape is the least ideal. In this way, we must understand the role of "valve" in racing pigeon flight. There are two loose-leaf tissues on both sides of the "flap" of racing pigeons, like two doors. These two doors are always in an open and closed state when flying. The diamond-shaped "valve" is ideal precisely because when the door is opened and closed, there will always be a gap, or "gap", which is the largest compared with other shapes of "doors", and the diamond-shaped "valve" is the most ideal. The reasons why other shapes are general, ideal and not ideal are also derived from this. A pigeon fancier raised this question on the Internet: My pigeon is healthy and has no respiratory problems, but the pigeon family is always lazy when flying. After several turns in the sky, it stopped to catch its breath. I don't know what went wrong. In this case, there is something wrong with the pigeon. If there is nothing wrong with it, it may be the pigeon variety, which means that the "petal" of your pigeon variety is the most unsatisfactory jujube pit shape. Modern people advocate scientific pigeon breeding, so the way of thinking has changed from focusing only on pigeon species to focusing on breeding work. When we encounter problems, we always start with the job. In fact, this is from one bias to another. Objectively speaking, the success or failure of pigeon racing mainly depends on the pigeon species. A good pigeon breed, a poor skill, still has the hope of winning, but the probability is smaller; And sending pigeons is also free, you will work hard on breeding and training. Regarding the "valve" shape of racing pigeons, what I am talking about here is, after all, an armchair strategist, and the division of its shape cannot be exactly the same as the actual pigeons. But no matter what shape the valve is, it is ideal to observe that the "door" can leave a gap when opening and closing, and the bigger the gap, the better. This is because racing pigeons are very fierce in the competition, and they need to absorb a lot of oxygen and discharge a lot of carbon dioxide. If the "valve" is narrow, it will lead to insufficient oxygen supply, which will lead to "oxygen debt". Pigeons will feel tired and be forced to stop exercising and have to open their mouths to breathe. It says that all pigeons are lazy and stop breathing after running a few laps, which may be caused by this situation. There may be many "beautiful" pigeon mouths, which need to be further explored and discovered.
