Why are special effects in movies shot in front of a green screen?

During the holidays, many friends will go to the movies. When it comes to movies and TV series, especially science fiction and epic dramas, a technique called green screen keying is basically used. The actors stand in front of a green curtain to perform, and then use post-production keying technology to cut out the green screen and replace it with other backgrounds. Therefore, in some behind-the-scenes reveal videos, we often see actors standing silly and dancing in front of a green screen, and those who don't know it think they are sick.

Why do you want to shoot like this? The first is to save money! There are so many scenes in some movies and TV series that they are too complicated. Rebuilding them is time-consuming, laborious and expensive, and may not necessarily achieve good results. At this time, using green screen keying to superimpose characters onto 3D animation scenes is an effective and cost-effective method. And because the subject of special effects is people, generally speaking, people’s clothes, skin color, and hair are not green.

So using a green curtain as the background is easier to handle during post-production of special effects and can be easily separated from the main character. From a professional point of view, movie film is composed of three tones: red, green, and blue, which means that generally, these three colors can be selected for curtains. Therefore, blue screen technology is used more in Asia. Because Asians’ eyes are not blue, as long as there is no other blue color appearing on their bodies, there will be no problem.

It is not possible to use red, because it is close to human skin color, and actors are easily uncomfortable in a red environment. Green is chosen because compared to the other two colors, the green background will appear obvious. Reflection ratio is better. Therefore, it is not only green screen that can be used for keying, but blue screen can also be used. However, in Europe and America, green screen is used more often because of blue eyes.
