How do you evaluate the movie "Assassination of Novelists"?
The 2020 Spring Festival stalls disappeared due to the impact of the epidemic, which indirectly led to the 2021 Spring Festival stalls being extremely "crowded", creating a situation in which multiple blockbusters compete.
Among so many movies, the one that most attracts Chongqing tourists is "Assassination of Novelists". Youpin is not a reader of the original novel, so he didn’t come here for that. He paid more attention to the film’s filming location, Chongqing, and the dual-line narrative between the real world and the fantasy world of the novel.
The following content may contain spoilers for some movies, so please read with caution.
Although many scenes of the movie were shot in Chongqing, this was not used as a selling point in its early publicity and was only revealed in advance through scenes in the trailer.
At the beginning of the story, Guan Ning, one of the protagonists, appears. Her long hair is messy and greasy. Without any explanation, You Pin once thought that Lei Jiayin was still playing Zhang Xiaojing in "The Twelve Hours of Chang'an" and not the film's protagonist Guan Ning.
Immediately, the story slowly unfolded, and through interspersing and recalling, the premise of Guan Ning (played by Lei Jiayin)'s daughter being abducted and the novel's young boy Kong Wen preparing for revenge were explained. At the same time, it also explains a special skill that Guan Ning possesses - 100% hit. This skill is also crucial in the subsequent development of the story.
Immediately afterwards, Tu Ling, played by Yang Mi, appeared, and then triggered the main line of the story - the assassination of the novelist. The name "Tu Ling" is quite interesting. If you guessed correctly, it should be based on the name of Turing, the father of computer science.
Tu Ling is from Aladdin Company, whose product is called the Magic Lamp. According to its founder, Li Mu, he has the power to change the world. It is precisely from this that an important setting of the film is thrown out: the world of the novel corresponds to the real world, and will directly affect the real world.
It sounds like a ridiculous theory, but Guan Ning also raised questions in the film. Guan Ning asked Tu Ling: Do you believe it? Tu Ling replied: My boss just believes it!
Okay! Since you want to watch this movie, this basic world view setting is still acceptable. At the end of the film, in a sense, this set of logic does make sense, but it is not what you and I thought at the beginning.
The subsequent plot, in addition to a certain degree of correlation between the real world and the fantasy world, basically continues the traditional story line development path. The protagonist moves forward and finally confronts the villain head-on, and the result must be that justice defeats evil.
So, is this movie satisfying?
When I wrote this, the rating of "Assassination Novelist" on Douban was 7.2, which is relatively good. However, if you let the game to score, it will definitely not be so high. In your opinion, it is hardly satisfactory.
The most disappointing part is undoubtedly the film’s handling of Chongqing, the filming location. After watching the movie, Youpin probably understood why Chongqing location was not the focus in the early promotion, because it was not the focus at all.
The film sets Chongqing as "Liangjiang City", which corresponds to the Yangtze River and Jialing River. There is nothing wrong with this name. At the same time, a large number of Chongqing's landmark buildings and urban features also appeared, and even Lu Kongwen, played by Dong Zijian, spoke Chongqing dialect.
However, the addition of these elements has no actual benefit in showing the city of Chongqing.
The mountain city of Chongqing actually has a fantasy quality, and its image is very consistent with the tone of the film. However, the entire film’s presentation of Chongqing can really only be described as “superficial”.
Let’s talk about the plot of the movie. Since I haven’t read the original novel, I can’t compare it with the original work. Fans of the novel can share their opinions if they have read the movie. Just from the perspective of a movie audience, there are many deficiencies and unclear reasons in the plot of this movie.
At the beginning, when the young boy Kongwen was in danger, his sister suddenly appeared to lend a helping hand, and then he was pushed directly off the cliff. In movies and TV dramas, falling off a cliff has always been the safest way to escape. However, who would have thought that the young man Kong Wen would climb up the cliff again, and even stab the leading villain. The whole opening was really baffling.
The battle scenes in the novel world are also surprising. Several "dragons" composed of fireworks and lanterns have become the most lethal weapons in the entire battle. It was really embarrassing when the people in the city shouted "dragon" loudly.
In the end, the real world and the novel world had a final battle simultaneously, and the real world seemed a bit too childish.
Is it really necessary to set up jokes, rubber gloves and wooden floor insulation during the decisive battle? But when "Gatling" and the phrase "on behalf of the moon will destroy you" appeared in the novel world, it seemed a bit restrictive.
Since we can freely use our imagination, shouldn’t the scene be bigger?
At the same time, there are problems with the overall rhythm and scene control of the movie. It is not until halfway through the movie that the "bloody" scenes really appear. Most of the previous scenes are unmentionable. Cheer up.
Special note, what you watched was the first show at 9:35 in the morning.
Then take a look at the acting skills of each character in the movie. According to You Pin, the only surprise is Guo Jingfei. It seems that Lei Jiayin has not stepped out of the shadow of "Zhang Xiaojing", even if her hairstyle has changed, it is of no use. Yang Mi's action scenes are quite good, but when you find that she maintains a unified expression throughout the movie, this advantage becomes gone.
As for Dong Zijian, although he is an example among many younger generation actors who have been recognized for their acting skills, his performance in the film is really not outstanding.
Why should we talk about Guo Jingfei alone? Because until the end credits showed the cast list, Youpin never found out which character he was playing, so he later looked for behind-the-scenes footage. I have to say that Guo Jingfei is really tall.
Since it is a fantasy blockbuster, visual effects should also be the focus of the movie. Indeed, the film has created a rather fantastic world, and its technical level should be considered among the best in the country.
What Youpin watched was the 2D version. I don’t know why this theater only has 2D movies. However, the viewing experience of most 3D movies currently on the market is not as good as 2D. From this point of view, it can It is also the conscience of movie producers and theaters to retain the 2D version of the film.
Movies are a very personal audio-visual product. Everyone has different needs and different judging criteria. However, for "Assassination of Novelists", Youpin can only choose not to recommend it.
As a film set in Chongqing, it does not give full play to the characteristics of Chongqing. How to give full play to the characteristics of the city, "Passing Through Your World" has given the best answer.
As a fantasy special effects blockbuster, the plot rhythm is completely slow, and the previous parts cannot mobilize the audience at all, resulting in a serious disconnect.
As a film that can explore in depth, the theme of "As long as you believe, you can achieve it" wants to talk about faith, but such faith seems too thin and lacks sufficient support.
To sum up, this movie is not worth the ticket price, even if you buy a discounted movie ticket. At the same time, because of the film's theme and some fighting scenes, this movie is not suitable for the whole family to watch.
