Highlights of the street dance showdown
Big screen debut
After "Avatar" set a new box office record, filmmakers and fans around the world have seen the charm of 3D movies. Immediately afterwards, "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans" both chose the 3D mode of expression. However, apart from animation, those who choose 3D are all blockbusters with magnificent scenes and momentum. For a film that focuses on emotional scenes and dance themes, is it a waste to use 3D?
In fact, director Dania Pasquini also has doubts in this regard. He said: What I'm not sure about is whether the 3D dance effect will be amazing and whether it will be as impactful as a blockbuster movie. This is what I am worried about. As for the design of the dance scenes, it is very different from ordinary movies. We must use our strengths and avoid weaknesses to highlight the splendor and dazzlingness of 3D. I have reduced a lot of scenes that are common in ordinary movies and ordinary talent shows this time, mainly to serve 3D. In fact, Dennis’s doubts are also those of the hip-hop group Diversity. Ashley Banjo, a member of Diversity, said: Designing dance moves for 3D movies is actually a headache, because we can’t dance as we like when downloading movies. We must consider that this is 3D. What we are facing is a 3D camera. In short, we must first adapt to the way of 3D appreciation before we can design actions for 3D movies. I hope that our performances and dances can make the audience experience the splendor and dazzlingness that ordinary films cannot show.
Although this film is the big screen debut of Dania Pasquini and Marcos Giva, these two directors are not newbies. In the 20 years they have been in the industry, they have been active as directors of MTV in the UK and the United States, and have won numerous awards. Talking about the original intention of shooting this film, Dania Pasquini said: At the beginning, Gieva and I just wanted to make a film about the conflict between the two cultures represented by hip-hop and ballet. Especially showing the charm of ballet to the young audience in front of the screen. These young people often have preconceptions about ballet, thinking that it is old-fashioned and rigid, but this is not the case. I want them to know that ballet is a cool thing to do. So in terms of actors, I found many young and beautiful actors, the purpose is to let them understand that ballet is not just for the elderly and middle-aged. Ballet and hip-hop are representatives of two different cultures, one is traditional classical culture and the other is emerging street culture. When I put two cultures together to make a movie, I don't mean to rank them one by one or rank them higher or lower. My purpose is to show the upward, tenacious and tenacious spirit contained in dance, so that people can understand the beauty of dance and the joy of dancing - in fact, all dance arts are like this. The feeling of shooting a movie is very different from shooting an MTV, but I have accumulated a wealth of experience in my 20 years of working on MTV. Thanks to these experiences, it helped me understand how I should make movies.
The legendary George Sampson
George Sampson, who starred as Eddie in the film, is a well-known star in the UK. Born in 1993, he won the second season of the talent show "Britain's Got Talent" - when he was only 14 years old. Perhaps compared to his dancing skills, Sampson's experience is more convincing. In his early years, Sampson's parents divorced, and Sampson and his brother lived with their mother. His poor family did not let him give up his love for dance. He danced and performed on the streets to earn tuition for music and dance classes. His behavior was ridiculed and ridiculed by his classmates, but Sampson remained unmoved and continued to practice dancing. It seems that only dance can lead him out of the misfortune of life.
If this is how Sampson succeeds, then he can only be considered a half-legend. There is one more legendary thing. Since his early developmental years, Sampson has suffered from Shulman's disease, a rare spinal disorder that commonly occurs in adolescence and is characterized by rigid kyphosis of the thoracic or thoracolumbar spine. Sampson's doctor once warned him to stop dancing or he would be permanently paralyzed. But Sampson did not listen to the doctor's advice and insisted on expressing himself on the stage. In an interview, Sampson said: No one and nothing can stop me from dancing. Seeing Sampson's persistence, his doctor allowed him to continue dancing.
After winning the championship, Sampson shot this film. He said: Making movies is a very fun thing. I have never considered myself an actor. Ironically, when I was in drama school, my acting teacher told me I was a better actor than a good dancer. I just thought she was lying to me. But even after finishing the movie, she told me that she still thinks so. Making a movie is a completely different experience, very fun and very tiring. Because dancing on stage is my own business, and I just need to perform well. But making a movie is a collective job. For example, I had to dance in front of a group of people in the film. I shot that scene 12 times before it was completed. You know, if you really dance in front of a crowd, you won't be able to dance 12 times. After shooting this scene, I was exhausted.
However, if my performance or this movie can help people understand the connotation and significance of hip-hop, I think my hard work is worth it. Working with ballet dancers is definitely a unique experience because our dance requirements and understandings are so different, but our love for dance is absolutely the same. We sweat and even shed tears every day for what we love - I think this is the meaning of dance.
