In her spare time, she passed on her embroidery skills to her neighbors. Sun Jingbo was able to sew and thread at the age of four or five and liked to draw. He believed that his mother's temperament was influenced by her.

In the winter of 1950, Sun Jingbo went to Tonghe County, Heilongjiang Province to attend primary school with his mother and father. His hobby of drawing won the appreciation of physical and beauty teachers Teng Yunfeng and Mr. Hu Baoyi, and he suddenly became interested in painting. After 1957, Sun Jingbo was transferred to work with his parents. He successively received the guidance of enlightenment teachers in Jilin No. 4 Middle School, Wuhan WISCO Workers' Children Middle School (art teacher Huang Lesheng), and Nanjing No. 23 Middle School (art teachers Zhong Boyuan and Zheng Zhiyi). Encouragement determined the ambition to learn painting.

In 1960, Sun Jingbo was admitted to the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he was praised by principal Ding Jingwen, teachers Sun Zixi, Zhao Xi, Li Hua, Zhao Youping, Wang Dejuan, Lu Chen, Wei Zuyin, counselor Zhang Jingsheng and many other gentlemen. During this period, Sun Jingbo met famous figures such as Yao Zhonghua, Wang Jinyuan, Zhang Jianzhong, and Ding Shaoguang.

In 1972, Sun Jingbo's oil painting "Axi's New Song" was selected for the National Art Exhibition. Because he went to Beijing to join the "Reconstruction Group", he got to know famous artists Jin Shangyi, Zhu Naizheng, Chen Yifei, Chen Yanning, and Tang Xiaohe.

In 1978, Sun Jingbo was admitted to the postgraduate course of the Oil Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1980, he created "Awa Mountain People" and stayed at the school to teach in the Mural Painting Department after graduation.
