How to use the highlight priority function correctly in SLR cameras

The purpose of highlight priority function is to prevent the overexposed part of the image from being too large, resulting in the loss of image details.

Generally speaking, if the dynamic ratio is suitable for the digital range, we just need to be careful not to overexpose, and the exposure should be as high or low as possible, so that the color of the picture will be brighter.

If there are only a few highlights, such as the sun, then about 5%-8% of the whole shooting range is allowed to produce highlights, and if most of the subject is exposed correctly, a small part is allowed to reflect light to express the texture.

If the highlight part exceeds 10%, it needs to be properly processed. The general shooting environment exceeds the dynamic ratio of digital recording. The method is as follows: 1. To avoid highlights, such as overexposure of the sky, we can reduce its proportion or not shoot highlights. 2. Use a gradient lens to reduce highlights. 3. Shoot highlights and dark parts separately, and then reproduce the scene with HDR. These three methods are roughly the same.

There is also a way to block night shooting with black cards. The black card works when the shutter is low, but it doesn't work when the shutter is fast.

When we use highlight priority, we should pay attention to its proportion in the overall picture and handle it flexibly. These methods can greatly improve the chances of shooting, but photography is a self-creation process, so there is no definite number of strokes. For example, when taking portraits, the light overhead is too strong, which may easily lead to overexposure. At this time, a soft light plate or a material that weakens light will be added to the person's head to cover it. These parts will not be in the shooting range, but the highlights will be weakened to a certain extent, so there are various methods, and you need to master them flexibly according to your own needs.
