In September 1989, he formally studied stone carving skills with his father Pan Xicun (a master of Chinese stone carving art).

From September 1992 to July 1994, he entered the decoration and sculpture class of the Decorative Sculpture Department of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts and studied clay sculpture, wood carving, and decorative reliefs in the round under professors Zhang_, Xu Zhenglong, and Wang Xiaohui.
