What is the newly measured height of Mount Everest in 2020?

The latest altitude is 8848.86 meters.

On May 27th, 2020, eight members of the China 2020 Everest Elevation Survey Climbing Team successfully reached the summit, which was the second time that a survey team from China was welcomed after a lapse of 15 years. Compared with 2005, this survey is more scientific, reliable and innovative.

The main reasons include the first application of Beidou satellite navigation system in the calculation of the earth height at the summit of Mount Everest and the elevation measurement with domestic instruments. The picture shows members of the survey mountaineering team carrying out survey work at the summit of Mount Everest.

Extended data

In this survey, China combines 5G and Beidou for the first time, and uses the communication private network and Beidou data information management platform to realize the simultaneous reception, real-time analysis and quality pre-evaluation of Beidou-2 and Beidou-3 satellite signals in cold and high altitude environment.

The fusion of Beidou and GPS data effectively improves the high accuracy and reliability of the peak earth; Beidou and GPS geodetic height results are consistent, with an accuracy of 2.0 cm. At the same time, China and Nepal jointly constructed the global elevation datum of Mount Everest for the first time, and the difference of the peak geoid is only 7.2 cm, which is in good agreement with the results.

In order to improve the survey accuracy, China Geological Survey dispatched "Aerogeological No.1" aircraft to carry out the first comprehensive survey of airborne gravity and remote sensing in the Everest region of China, with a gravity survey area of 1.25 million square kilometers, which provided the best starting datum for altitude elevation in history.

The equipment used in this survey, such as peak gravimeter, snow depth radar, aerial gravimeter and other core equipment, is mainly domestic equipment, which has become the most beautiful scenery in this Everest elevation survey.

Shanghai Municipal Supervision Commission-China and Nepal announced that the latest elevation of Mount Everest is 8848.86 meters, a new height in the world.
